Shahbanou Farah and the author of The Alchemist an international bestseller which sold 11 million copies worldwide and translated in 41 languages with his highest readership being paradoxically in Iran and Israel ( see interview with Riz Khan below). Paulo Coelho is an outspoken activist for peace and social justice.

Paulo Coelho's 'The Alchemist' Goes Big Screen: 

 

"The Alchemist", the most prominent and bestseller novel from theBrazilian author, Paulo Coelho, will be adapted into a big screen material. Theannouncement of the matter has been done during a press conference at CannesFilm Festival on Sunday, May 18 by one of the owners of The Weinstein Company, HarveyWeinstein.


 

Insistingthat the movie will stay true to the essence of the book, Weinstein also announced that acclaimed actor Laurence Fishburne is touted to star, to helmand to co-produce the adaptation movie. On him joining the project, 46-year-oldFishburne commented, "This is a special project that now has a special team behind it to ensure that its path to the big screen is handled with theproper care it deserves. I am looking forward to directing it, acting in it, and collaborating with Harvey Weinstein to produce a beautiful film that will do justice to Paulo's enormously successful novel." 



 

Setto be made in a budget of $60 million, "Alchemist" follows a Spanish shepherd in a dream-inspired journey to find a treasure. The film will be shot in various locations in Europe and the Middle East in 2009, while the casting of the shepherd by the name of Santiago is said to start soon. Meanwhile,regarding the book itself, "Alchemist" has been translated into 56languages. It has become one of the best selling books in the history with thesales of more than 65 million copies in more than 150 countries.

 

About Paulo Coelho:

Paulo Coelho was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 1970, after deciding that law school was not for him, he traveled through much of South America, North Africa, Mexico, and Europe. Returning to Brazil after two years, he began a successful career as a popular songwriter. In 1974, he was imprisoned for a short time by the military dictatorship then ruling in Brazil. 


In 1988, Coelho published The Alchemist, which has sold more than 11 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 41 languages. He has written more than a dozen novels, including The Pilgrimage and Veronika Decides to Die, both of which are being adapted to film. 

Coelho is an outspoken activist for peace and social justice, and also supports the free distribution of his work. He and his wife Christina split their time between Rio de Janeiro, and France.
