Actress Angelina Jolie has called for an end to the violence in Syria after meeting refugees in Jordan's Zaatari camp.(Source: persianrealm.com

The number of people fleeing the conflict in Syria is said to be more than 235,000, according to the UN High Commission for Refugees. Speaking at the camp she said: "It's impossible to imagine any mother standing by and not stepping up and doing something to prevent this." (See Related News)

The UN's refugee agency has warned that as many as 700,000 people could have fled Syria by the end of the year, a huge increase on its previous estimate.

Some 294,000 refugees have already left Syria, and the UNHCR is appealing for $490m (£300m) to deal with the crisis.

Most of the refugees are housed in camps in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.

UN special envoy and actress Angelina Jolie has visited Syrian refugees in the Domiz camp in the northern Iraqi Kurdish province of Duhouk.

According to the UN refugee agency, some 22,847 Syrians have fled to Iraq since the conflict in Syria began.

Angelina Jolie has recently visited refugee camps in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan to shed light on the plight of the Syrian refugees and to call on the international community for help.
