catch 22
by IRANdokht on Sun Jun 07, 2009 02:45 PM PDTAri jan
I agree that so far the "sense of good" in people has not manifested itself enough to justify getting rid of the superstitions, but as long as it's encouraged to fear the wrath of God, people will not have the opportunity to mature and become better human beings on their own either. It's more of a catch-22!
If we all start teaching our kids (by example of course) not to steal an apple from the neighbor's yard regardless of whether they see a painful consequence or not, after a few generation this need for the invisible guy in the sky would end. Unfortunately there is no incentive for people to change for the better since the old ways promise them a chance to be immortal and to live in heavenly pleasures for eternity. Who wouldn't prefer that as a reward!

very clever and sincere poem!
by Ari Siletz on Sun Jun 07, 2009 02:14 PM PDTSecularism has an implied faith in human good nature that begs proof of existence as much as the idea of God.
Thank you for your comments

Monda jan I wished I were that talented!!!
This poem was sent to me today by one of my closest friends and the title of the email said: I know you'd appreciate this one!
I liked it alot and I went online to find the poem along another one from Babak Esshaghi and copied it here to share with friends. (The one emailed was in form of a JPG file).
It's funny because the person who sent it me has spent countless hours trying to convince me that "people need to believe in a supreme being". She claims that once you reach a certain level of understanding you'd realize that God does exist and she claims the "true Islam" is the ultimate vehicle for this revelation. My argument is that her "true Islam" does not comply with the one that so many of the Islamic scholars are advocating, and that she would be damned by the majority of the muslims for having tried to reinvent the religion and not follow its every rule. She's never able or willing to defend religions due to the historical facts and the ugliness that each religion has transformed into through time by their die-hard supporters.
We've just agreed to disagree and stay the close and caring friends that we are to one another despite my serious problem with all religions including but not limited to Islam.
Let's hope that people evolve with the understanding that frees them from being a follower of someone else's idea of "God", and make a conscience decision to do no harm, be fair and respect all.

Thanks!
by Maryam Hojjat on Sun Jun 07, 2009 02:22 AM PDTfor sharing. Indeed that is what I think about GOD. All religions are creation of a lot of crooked people who were trying to exploiet the rest.

I started reading the poem thinking how talented IRANdokht was as a poet, until I saw Ashaghi's name! :o)
