Oh I missed her so much! Eversince switching to the new design the only thing I have missed about the old iranian.com has been the swimming goldfish.
It was originally created by Mehrdad Aref-Adib for Norooz a couple of years ago. The fish is of course one of the symbols of life -- not only on Sofreh Haft-Seen but in Iranian art and culture -- for centuries (feel free to correct me). So Mehrdad's creation was very appropriate and tasteful for the occasion.
But Norooz came and went and I didn't want to change the logo back. That sweet little thing took my heart and whenever I see her I always smile... I come alive. (My cousin has a goldfish in his kitchen... I always say hello to her like I'm petting a dog!)
So when the new site design took off in August, Ardalan Payvar proposed the current logo -- without the fish. I liked it -- a lot -- even though the great majority of people I've asked have said they don't care much for it. To me the curves in the font make it kind of playful and carefree, like a court jester's hat... sort of. But still, I missed the goldfish.
A few days ago I emailed Mehrdad and asked him if he could insert an animated goldfish on the new logo. He did it in a matter of hours. And it's mighty beautiful. I'm so thrilled... isn't she the cutest thing? :o)
Mehrdad Jan... yek donya mamnoon!

To Caspian and Sasha
by Niki Tehranchi on Sat Nov 03, 2007 11:27 AM PDTTo Caspian:
You are so right about weird cultural wiring. Somebody said in a comment to one my previous blogs that we have created a hierarchy of animals, selecting which animals it is okay to eat and which animals it isn't. What are the roots of it? Must be something that goes back to the cavemen era. I have no idea. Interesting that one of the first cases we studied in law school was about a man who had specified in his will that he wants his favorite horse to be shot dead after his death, the reasoning being nobody would take care of it the way he would and he did not want his beloved horse to one day be neglected or end up as dog food. We were discussing the ethics of carrying out this act of violence just because it is in a perfectly valid legal document. 99.9% of the class stood against it and thought it outrageous. Professor asked would you feel the same way if he had willed his favorite pig to be shot ? That was food for thought (no pun intended). Why did we hold the horse to be a noble and precious animal whereas the poor pig was expendable? I hope you do research that and enlighten us. I know this issue will be definitely be on my mind until I can come up with some sort of explanation.
To Sasha:
Of course you can name your fish Niki, good luck with that!

Niki and Caspianseamermaid: You want to hear twisted
by Sasha on Fri Nov 02, 2007 04:07 PM PDTYou want to hear twisted and macabre. Well I have real story for you. My grandfather was raising a goat and when I would go and visit I would always feed this goat. I even gave it a name. I think it was like almost a year of doing this. One day, we sat down to eat. My guy cousins turn around and tell me. "Do you know what you are eating or better yet who you are eating?" I said "What do you mean?" They told me it was my pet goat. I ran outside an threw up and started crying and told my mom. Well my mom told their moms and they got the spanking of a lifetime. It is the honest truth. Sometimes reality is sicker than fiction.

Niki, thank you for answering
by caspianseamermaid on Fri Nov 02, 2007 03:57 PM PDTIt's just weird to me. Isn't it weird that we have pets and at the same time eat them? I don't think it makes anyone a hypocrite, just some sort of cultural wiring thing.
I'd love to get to the bottom of this....

I don't eat goldfish
by Niki Tehranchi on Fri Nov 02, 2007 03:16 PM PDTthat's for sure!
But yes I am partial to grilled salmon and the occasional seared tuna. Does that make me a hypocrite I guess it does.
I am going to go and hang my head in shame for a while :-(
Niki: Awesome.............Thanks
by Sasha on Fri Nov 02, 2007 03:15 PM PDTWell, now I know why all those goldfish never had a chance for survival at my home growing up. We did everything wrong. Five years with one fish. Wow! I am amazed. Thanks a lot. You just saved the life of my future goldfish. In your honor may I call it Niki?:o)

My lessons in taking care of a goldfish :-)
by Niki Tehranchi on Fri Nov 02, 2007 02:17 PM PDTI am not sure if these are golden rules but they have worked for me so far (learned them from Grampa who has a record in keeping his goldfish for 5 years)
1) Don't overfeed: a few flakes per day, given in one feeding, usually in the morning, suffice for their small little bodies
2) Don't go crazy changing the water: Every time you do it it is pretty traumatic for the poor little thing, that is if you employ my primitive methid of simply scooping him out and put him in a new fresh bowl of water. I do it once every 2 weeks.
3) As I said I keep 2 bowls handy: one is the old one and the other is the new one instead of having poor fish simmer in a temporary cup while I clean his bowl, I simply transfer him to the new bowl. Also for some reason, it is better to keep the bowl with the fresh water empty for 24 hours before transferring the fish to it
4) Lots of love and attention including talking to him (but don't knock on the glass, the vibrations are not good for them)
5) Good luck!
Niki: Don't mean to jinx you but...........

My 1st pet
by Niki Tehranchi on Fri Nov 02, 2007 01:12 PM PDTDear Jahanshah
It is so nice to read one of your posts (they are too few and far between). My 1st pet was a goldfish (since my dad is the typical Iranian who cannot stand any furry things but according to him since fish live in water, they are clean!). I got it when I was 4 for Nowrooz. Unfortunately it died within days and I was heartbroken. I learned the concept of love and death in a couple of days through that goldfish. I did not get a goldfish for many years after that. Every time my parents would mention it for Nowrooz, I would say no, remember that goldfsih who died? Well, in March 2006, 26 years after the traumatic death of my goldfish, I decided to give it another try. Actually it was not a conscious decision. I was doing Nowrooz shopping and the check out lady at Q Market was giving them away for free and I felt it would be too rude if I reject it. So I took the goldfish home with mixed feelings. I hope I am not jinxing myself but my gold fish (christened Nima in honor of Captain Nemo) is alive and well and kicking and swimming to this day. All I ever gave it was love and attention. I swear everytime I come near his bowl he sticks his face close to the glass in my direction and when I feed him, he is so smart, he finds the little flakes instantly and eats them with a real joy.
Thank you for sharing your story and for giving us a little piece of yourself and making our day brighter.
All our love from Casa Niki, including Nima the Fish.

JJ one logical and good suggestion
by Sasha on Fri Nov 02, 2007 12:33 PM PDTOn the iranian.com logo "Nothing is sacred" can those words be made a little darker? I can barely read them on my computer screen. I am sure I am not the only one with the problem. Just thought you might want to know.
Have a great weekend. At least I hope you take a break from the madness on the weekends. You know go see a good aquarium display and just relax...........regenerate the batteries and return refreshed..................renewed.
Now, that I think about it I might just take my own advice and visit the local aquarium. Too bad I gave my camera away a couple of months ago. :o)
