Berenj disaster .... help

My usual brand of rice 'tilda' has doubled in price and since we eat so much of it, I thought I would try a different brand and bought this 'badshah' brand for a good deal less.

The first time I used it I soaked the rice as usual for a day. I didnt cook well and there was no yummy smell when cooking. The grains didnt grow and it didnt taste so good either. So I thought ok next time I will soak it for longer and and see what happens.

Next time just happened to be a day when we had guests for chello kebab.I soaked the rice for 24 hours.  The meat was well marinated and I had prepared all the usual accompanying dishes. The sun was shinning for a change ( UK weather) and all was going well, except the rice still did not smell right. It still did not grow and I was at a loss to know what more I could do. So I had to serve this rice to my guests and although it was better than before, it was still not perect ... I am well known for my 'perfect' rice. The potatoe  tah dig was good but the rice had not changed colour much.

I have come to the conclusion that the rice grains are to hard to absorb. Another reason for thinking this is that the butter coated the outside of the grains but did not taste of it.

Now I am left with 10 kg of this 'badshah' rice to use! Anyone have any ideas how I can improve it ?????

Here is a word of advice from " Uncle Napolean" :

Kaar Kaare Inglisaast !!

Still I believe it is a plot, masterminded in Ingelis.Look you ended up giving her the rice .Don't you see the trail of the plot from the time she suggested the brand to you!?why didn't she recommend it when the rice was cheap?!.

Ghaasem Boro Bebin Ghoshoone Ingelisaa Kojaan!

Stick with "Tilda" the brand you know

and had good results with. BTW, I wouldn't trust any brand name with the word "Shah" in it. :-)

Funny you should mention Paris

by javaneh29 on

Í am in Paris next month so I  will definstely check Mezeh out .. looks great , thsnks for the link. :) So pleased someone found it funny !! I can laugh about it now but at the time I was embarresed.

My khaahar shohar is lovely Ebi. But she isnt the best of cooks though. I have decided that since she likes this berenj so much I will give the remaining 10kg to her, although I feel bad about giving her naff berenj.

And I never feed rice to birds ... dont worry.

I bought another brand of rice today and it was just fine. Back to normal!! I dont know if our friends will risk another meal with us! I think they put my disaster down to my english half and so I was excused! I have to entice them back with something delicious!

Today my son decided to eat the left overs from yesterday. I warned him the rice was not up to my usual standard and he is such a heathen were food is concerned.. you know teenagers ?  he told me 'mom rice is rice is rice'. Two mouthfuls later he called out 'I take it all back. this berenj is terrible, what did you do to it'. Well I did warn him!

Warning...don't feed rice to birds!

by K Nassery on

The rice grains can swell inside the digestive system of the birds and kill them.  Please, do not throw rice outside for birds to eat.

Just throw it in the garbage if you don't like it.

Thank you for all your

Thank you for all your comments and recommendations.

I bought the rice on the advice of my sister in law. Her rice was not so perfect but I thought it was the way she cooked it. In my conceit I thought I could do better . It was a big mistake. I dont usually sacrifcie quality for quantity especially with rice. In fact  I dont usually sacrifice it with any thing. It was a bad experiement.

I will try some of your sugestions and see if I can improve it but my instinct is to just go and buy some of my usual brand. 10 kg is now £33!! BUT its worth it. I havent seen 'Royal' here but I will investigate.

And yes ... the name should have told me something... you're right!!

I don't have any suggestions for your remaining supply of the rice and what to do with it, but...next time you shop for rice, try "ROYAL" brand if it's available in UK.

I bet you won't be disappointed.

I have never heard of tilda rice. One suggestion I can give you is to wash, massage and drain the rice at lease for 4 hours. I know it is very time consuming but result is worthed. It makes the rice not only delicious but also shiny. You don't need to soak it for too long. Couple of hours is enough. don't boil it for too long either. You should feel some hard texture in the middle when you bite the grain. Good luck. By the way, why don't you tell me your way of kooking rice your stile. I am sure I will benefit from your recipe.

my english friend used to say he is not rich enough to buy any thing cheap.

since the weather is good in uk, you can feed the pigeons with the rice since they won't know the difference. and while you have the supply of this rice please do not invite me for polo khoresh or chelo kabab. :-)  by the way didn't the name BAD shah give you some clue?

How could you sacrifice quality for quantity?!I'm cheesed off dear!!.

Well maybe you should change the procedure, since every rice has its own way of coming out alright, even if it is a low grade brand. Are you sure 24 hours of soaking is not too long?!

AnonymousChef has excellent ideas, specially the one for mixing the rice,it works.

Chelokabab with "cheap rice"?! our ancestors are shaking in their graves!!.

good luck

Forget Mr Brown

by AnonymousChef (not verified) on

Why do people in England listen to this man's "be cheap" advice?
Anyway you have two options:
1) keep the rice for shir-berenj,sholehzard, aash and koofteh... Buy some premium rice to serve polo to your guests.

2) to improve on this rice's smell, if you really don't want to splurge on good brands, buy some smoked flavored rice and mix them. 20% of smoked rice and 80% of this one would do the trick.

good luck
