The Mark

The Mark
by Latina
21-Mar-2011

I still bear the mark upon my arm

Branded upon me against my will

Yet the memory is burned upon my mind

The memory of that dreadful day remains

If only, I had known it was to come

I would have gone a different path

Innocently, I traveled that dreadful path

Unbeknownst, it could have been my last

Yet tragedy did strike me that very day

Oh my beloved One, my life was spared

Nothing was left of thee but a lifeless shell

I was left to mourn your loss, as day by day

I rose again, as one of the living dead

No joy or peace I felt, only despair

In a Zombie like state, I remained

I continued on my endless path

Waiting for the nightmare to end

When will the nightmare end for me?

Natalie, this is a great poem that shows so much devotion.

As said below; hang in there and eat some really hot food.  The pain/burning in your mouth may just momentarily mask the pain in your heart.

Natalie about Thai food.

by Esfand Aashena on

Natalie I must admit 20 years ago I wouldn't go near Thai food.  For whatever reason Thai restaurants used to hang skinned ducks as their window dressing thinking this is the way to go! Now having eaten ducks in Iran I know they're not that big of a deal so when you showcase them like this it's not even appetizing and you wonder what they're thinking or what else they're cooking!

But then later they changed their duck "decorations" and made their restaurants more welcoming with good ambiance.  So then I tried them and started liking them.

I'd recommend you also order a glass of plum wine to go with their food, they usually have it.  It's good food and not necessarily spicy and you can always ask them not to make them spicy and they know.

Next you should try Indian food!  I'll save that for your next poem!

Everything is sacred

Hi! Natalia,

Trader Joe sells Thai noodle with peanut paste.....OMG! It is delicious.....you can find it in the salad section......I eat it cold, it is still yummy.......the peanut paste flavors up the entire food! I don't feel Thai food very spicy.......tabasco sauce is truly spicy....Thai food is flavorful, but not spicy according to my opinion! Look forward to your next blog!

Hi! Mouse,

I opened your links.......your Kaleh Pacheh photo reminds me of Georgia Okeeffe's painting! LOL!

Hi! Comments,

Wow! You ran into 10 groups of Iranians.......I was in Hawaii for 4 years......only ran into one Iranian.....she is a Chemistry graduate student....very pretty and stylish girl......this young American Chemistry professor kept staring at her......it cracked me up!

There are so many topics to discuss :) Thai food is really good to try once in a while.  I took my mother for Thai food with noodle, and she wanted to know why I ordered makaroni for her.  "couldn't we have macaroni at home?".

Kaleh Pacheh was my favourite, but not anymore.  Last time that I tried I didn't find it spicy or tasty.

Also, since Yolanda mentioned I have to say that I have been in Hawaii 2 times.  Thanks for the funding; otherwise, I had no intention to travel.  I am not a beach person, but Hawaii was really nice.  Really; new, chick, different and advanced.  Almost 80% of tourists were Japanese.  I saw almost 10 groups of Iranians too and one of them came from Iran!  About the poem I maybe understand straighforward and easy poems.  But I love wisdom quotes.

Dear Natalie, you should try Thai food

by Anahid Hojjati on

Spices in thai food are different than some other spicy food. I think lemon is more used in thai food than many other countries. Also ginger. Even if you make a certain thai food and put less spice in it, it will still be good. Thai food also uses much vegetable, many different ones can be used in one dish. Some thai food uses peanut based sauce.

I can honestly say that I have never had Thai food.  Is it spicy food? I have a tendency to have an allergic reaction if the food is too spicy.

Though that eggplant dish you mentioned does sound very good.

You sounded just like my students when they have to change their conduct clip. lol

I do like eggplant but no Fish eye for me. :o)

Natalie, Thanks for your comment and since we are ...

talking about food now here, let me put my two cents. The thai eggplant chicken and phad thai are good dishes.  I like their curries too: green, yellow and the red ones. But my daughter does not like Curry so much. Also Ginger Chicken is a good thai dish.  Larb Gai (minced Chicken salad) is a good salad and should appeal to Iranians.

Natalie it was not all my fault!

by Esfand Aashena on

Yolanda had a hand in it too!  Anyway, didn't mean to change the subject this much but I suppose it's all in good fun!  Glad you had a good birthday but at the time you were talking seafood so ... ;-)

Yolanda, hot clay pots are actually hot clay pots literally!  They serve hot food in these clay dishes which keeps them warm.  Sometimes they light up the pot and you eat while your food is on fire! , like a small clay ball/pot/bowl. I don't have a particular Thai dish but like all of them, except the very exotic ones!

Everything is sacred

Thank you! I am glad that you liked the poem.

In all honesty Fish eye was not in my thoughts when I created the poem.

Raton seems to love food. Especially if it is ethnic.

Best!

Fish eye?

by Latina on

Aye! Raton, you and your food tastes.

My son made me a nice birthday dinner in which his girlfriend, Julio, my mom and I had an excellent family gathering.

Now, no more talk of food for a loooong while. :o)

Hi! Natalia,

Thai food tastes great........Thai ice tea tastes great......Thai dessert is yummy.......I had mango & sweet glutinous rice sprinkled with coconut milk last time....I was in Heaven...........I have to admit that the dessert is loaded with calories and starchy carbohydrates............but it was scrumptious!

When I was at A and M, there was no Thai restaurant there. I don't know if they have it right now!

What is going on?

by Soosan Khanoom on

how can you turn this beautiful poem totally to a blog on "kalleh pacheh "  and " kalleh mahee "  " Taei" and " flat noodle?  some of you here  have no " sassat " I mean " ehsassat "

this is a romantic poem and you guys have killed the romance

probably the poet is thinking to herself

"If only, I had known it was to come

I would have gone a different path

Innocently, I traveled that dreadful path

Unbeknownst, it could have been my last"

Thai rice noodles and big flat noodles.

by Esfand Aashena on

Yolanda I think are two kinds of flat Thai noodles and I like them both!  The rice noodles are unique and since we eat a lot of rice in Iran too this is a welcome change.  They are in lighter sauces though.

The big flat Thai noodles are not rice noodles and are heavier and also heavier sauces.  Both very good!  I like Cantonese dishes too and the hot clay pots.

Natalie perhaps you should try an ethnic Thai food for your next get together!  Don't forget it has to be an ethnic Thai place and not one of those fancy shmancy ones!

Everything is sacred

by yolanda on

Hi! Mouse,

The thai food flat noodles are my favorite, too: big flat noodle with barbecue duck (or chicken), egg, and some green vegetables.....the color of the noodles is brown......but this delicious dish is loaded with carbohydrates and calories.......everytime I eat it.......I gain at least one pound the next day......actually Cantonese food has the similar type of dish....they call it "rice noodles"......apparently the big flat noodles are made of rice instead of wheat! The flat noodles have softer texture than the regular noodles!

Yolanda tofu IS cardboard!

by Esfand Aashena on

I like the seaweed and cucumbers but they're side dishes and not a meal.  The only thing I can remember is the Korean spicy pork Burgoni or something like that.  That was good but the rest, even the adverised Korean barbeque is not that much different than others.

I also like the thick flat Thai noodles.  Thai noodle dishes are good too.

Everything is sacred

Anahid Hojjati

Natalie, what a nice poem you have written

by Anahid Hojjati on

however, I am confused. Maybe I did not get your poem. I don't understand what your tender poem has to do with Fish eye ? In any case, thanks for sharing your beautiful poem.

yolanda

Hi Mouse,

My computer at work can't open the 2 links....I will try again at home.....actually I really got curious about the kaleh pacheh.......I will see if I can get it here......not sure if I will have the appetite to finish the whole sheep head! LOL! Maybe I can just take the leftover home......last time I had lamb shank in a Persian restaurant.....it was delicious....the meat was juicy and tender!

Korean food has different types of noodles.....there are Korean barbecues........they cook tofu a lot, too........but I recall you said tofu tastes like cardboard.......something like that...LOL! I also like the small dishes of stuff they give you before the main course: like Kimchee, seaweed, cucumbers, etc......

Esfand Aashena

Yolanda here's some kaleh pache dishes for you!

by Esfand Aashena on

You're right the traditional way is to get up early (way early) and have kaleh pache for breakfast.  Will give you plenty of energy for all day and then some!

We're turning Natalie's poem into places she may not want to go!  But that's her fault!  She started it!

So Natalie don't look here and here if you're squimish!

I like all those ethnic foods you mentioned but could never get the difference between Korean food and others.  Don't know what is good to have for Korean food or unique.

Everything is sacred

yolanda

.......

by yolanda on

Hi Mouse,

For me, I can' just have the soup: the liquid/broth.......I need the actual fish head there..... :o)

If I visit Iran, I will definitely try kale pacheh......I am willing to get up in the wee hours to catch the sheep head and trotters......I will take a picture before I eat it........hopefully I have the courage......I think sheep head looks more scary than fish head...:O).......another soup I like is ox-tail soup..........but I don't eat it very often 'cause it is red meat.......I pretty much stay away from red meat.......only eat it occasionally....... the ethnic food I like are Japanese, Korean, Thai, Indian, Persian, Mexican, and Vietnamese food!

Esfand Aashena

Yolanda I am not that liberated!

by Esfand Aashena on

As much as I like ethnic food and try different things, I can't eat all the stuff.  I can eat the fish head "soup", the soup part, and probably some of the head meat but I don't know if I can eat the big fish eyes!

In Iran we eat sheep head called kale pacheh and it is actually pretty good.  But I could never eat the eyes!

When I suggested fish eye soup for Natalie and company I was thinking of what could be the most ethnic seafood (she was thinking seafood) and that's what I could think of, wouldn't eat it myself but thought Natalie might like it!

Come to think of it and now that you've mentioned it I may actually get some fish head and make a fish head soup and see how it turns out! As you may also know White Fish is the traditional Norooz feast for Iranian and their Norooz spread and the White Fish head is also very popular and nutritious.  Any fish head is actually nutritious so I'll give it a try, but can't promise eating the eyes!

Everything is sacred

Hi Mouse,

When I was in Hawaii, I bought and cooked Mahi Mahi fish head for myself......pretty delicious....the Mahi Mahi's eye balls were as big as tennis balls.....LOL! Actually fish head is delicious, has a lot of soft tissues......more delicious than fish meat, I think! I truly enjoy eating fish head soup.....fish eye included!

Esfand Aashena

Natalie so where did you end up eating?

by Esfand Aashena on

You didn't use my suggestion of going somewhere ethnic so I wonder where you all ended up?

Now you didn't have to eat the fish eye soup but could've gone somewhere ethnic!  Ethnic food is the best and those who stick with just American food means they don't know how to cook and will end up fighting over food (being hungry and going tempermental :-) and what to eat or getting sick of eating the same old same old and ....

Everything is sacred
