Why write to your representatives?
by MM

Why bother writing at all?  Firstly, in general, by expressing your opinion as a constituent, your let your representatives who are sitting on the bench to lean one way or another.  Secondly, in the case of MKO, I really do not want the neo-cons to erect an opposition even worse than IRI.  By legitimizing MKO, it will give them a tremendous platform in the US to raise money for themselves, and influence policies in D.C.

I urge everyone to write to your representatives and discuss what matters to you regardless of whether the issue is too much taxes or to legitimize MKO.  I recently wrote to the representatives in my district regarding MKO and every one of them wrote me back and the following is a typical email I received.

Dear MM:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization.  I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue. .  As you may know, the Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization, also known as the People’s Mujahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), was added to the U.S. Department of State’s list of foreign terrorist organizations in October 1997.  The Department of State’s August 2010 report on international terrorism lists several terrorist attacks that the U.S. government believes the PMOI committed or supported.  In March 2011, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stated that the Department of State would carefully review the Department’s continued designation of the PMOI as a foreign terrorist organization.

A resolution (H. Res. 60) has been introduced in the House of Representatives urging the Secretary of State to remove the PMOI from the Department of State’s list of foreign terrorist organizations and to remove all restrictions on the group that have been imposed as a result of this designation.  This legislation has been referred to the House Judiciary and Foreign Affairs Committees. Currently, a similar resolution has not been introduced in the Senate.  Please be assured that I will keep your views in mind should this issue be considered by the Senate.  Thank you again for contacting me.

Indeed Divaneh,

Good example.  Unfortunately, the true opposition is too divided and the MKO is too far out to the right of IRI.

Mehrdad,

Participation in mass electronic campaigns is an excellent, but it is also said that "all politics is local".  If the representative knowns that the constituents in the district are saying something loud, they will listen, at least.  But, the key is not to be a one-issue constituent .  For example, one should participate in telephone-town-halls, ask questions about taxes/deficit.... and contribute to campaigns.

Dear MM, thanks for the good suggestion/reminder

by Bavafa on

you are one of the most civic minded and conscientious person here. I have wrote to my representative in the past but mostly thru an organized type petition. I should and will take time to write to them as you suggest and I appreciate you reminding us of this important issue. MKO needs to be exposed who they are.

Thanks MM jaan. There is no doubt that they know exactly what they are supporting. Given the MKO's objectives and history however, a clever opposition can make it into a big liability for the neocons.
