come on sweetheart
let's adore one another
before there is no more
of you and me
a mirror tells the truth
look at your grim face
brighten up and cast away
your bitter smile
a generous friend
gives life for a friend
let's rise above this
animalistic behavior
and be kind to one another
spite darkens friendships
why not cast away
malice from our heart
once you think of me
dead and gone
you will make up with me
you will miss me
you may even adore me
why be a worshiper of the dead
think of me as a goner
come and make up now
since you will come
and throw kisses
at my tombstone later
why not give them to me now
this is me
that same person
I may talk too much
but my heart is silence
what else can i do
I am condemned to live this life~Mowlana Jalaluddin Rumi
Enjoy :)

by Azarin Sadegh on Tue Apr 15, 2008 01:29 PM PDTMona Jan,
Thank you so much for giving me the Persian version of this "robai". I realize that in my existentialistic view back then, (very much influenced by Sartre and Camus), I remembered this poem’s ending like "Engar ke nist harche dar aalam hast"!
Actually, like you and your father, I used to go to same the book stores facing Tehran University and I would ask:"What's new?" I think they all knew me as one of their best customers! I was such a nerd, to the point of finishing Romain Rolland's "Enchanted Soul" in 4 days! That was the time of my youth! Good old times...but now it takes me forever to finish a book in english...it should be a sign of my midlife rebellion :-) Take care. Azarin
Dear Azarin...

I grew up with Khayaam and Mowlana...
by Azarin Sadegh on Tue Apr 15, 2008 12:00 PM PDTThanks a lot Mona Jan for your kind words. I have to tell you that I admire your positive attitude (so different from my kind of writings!)
BTW, how did you guess my love for Khayaam? I got to love him through a little book by Sadegh Hedayat named Taraane-haaye Khayaam and I also spent most of my time during the war with Iraq listenning to Shamloo citing Khayaam, Mowlana and of course Shamloo! (if i skip on mentionning Rachmaninov and shostakovich's music too, which helped me to keep longing to live. As long as I could be impressed by the beauty, I knew I was going to survive.)
Voila my favorite poem of Khayaam:
Chun nist ze har che hast joz baad be dast
Chun hast ze har che hast hejraan –o-shekast
Pendar keh hast harche dar aalam nist
Engar ke nist harche dar aalam hast
Thanks again,
Azarin

by Azarin Sadegh on Tue Apr 15, 2008 11:22 AM PDTDear Mona,
I might not be a religious person, but I've always loved Mowlana's poetry. Still I have to confess that I always come up with my personal interpretation of his poems :-) Today someone sent me this link and I thought you might enjoy it too:

Very touching and so true
by Ari (not verified) on Mon Apr 14, 2008 05:29 PM PDTDear Mona:
What a most appropriate and beautiful poem you chose. How relevant it is for all of us. We should really memorize and remember this poem every day and put it to practice.
Individuals like Rumi, Sa'adi, Hafez, Omar Khayaam etc. were all exceptional human beings. They really understood the true meaning of life.
Thank you for bringing sweetness into our life and making us aware that life is too short and we have to cherish every minute of it. Let's shed away the darkness, hatred, anger, and go into the world of the sublime.
ThankYou...
