Do we fantasize?

And whence freedom comes?
At what price?

Life's transience
Nothing justifies!

Bitter is our demise.
Or perhaps sweeter than our lives?

Should you a knave catechize?

من پی قطرۀ آبی گشتم

که توانم سخن از یک عطش جاویدان

با زلالش گویم.

می شناسی آیا

یک نشان از نفسی کو سخن از تشنگی نفس خدایی گفته است؟

من ورا می جویم

اگر آسیمه ام و ور آرام.

زندگی جستن خوشنودی بی پایانی است

که بدان دست نیابی آسان؛

و تلاشی ست مدام

سوی یک دلبر رازآلوده.

مابقی شعر و شعار است آری.

Of course, It is "mort" but I made a typo error, I'll change it.

Pieux (pious) could also a good translation for Zahed as at old time everybody was beleiving in religion. actualy nowdays you have some "modern Zahed" we could call them also politically correct people, I found hypocrit more appropriate for a poem.

Let me know if you have any other suggestion for improving translations, English or French . You manage both very well :-)

I think you could use "Libertine" in English as the closest translation for "Libertin".

But I was surprised by your use of the word "hypocrite" instead of "zaahed"..:-) Yet, I loved your poem in French! I find it more lyrical and powerful!

Orang jan, maybe wise could be used for "rend"

There are few equivalents for "rend". maybe wise would be a good one to choose in this case but I am not sure.

In English, The closest word to the Hafez's definition of rend might be irreverent, a free-thinker.

Should Rendan be translated by Cynics ?!

Agree with Azarine  for our mixed nature.

I like Mash Ghasm translation. I've a doubt about Rendan Translation ! Should it be Cynics ! I know it is not easy to translate Rendan which is very used in our literature especially by Hafez. 

Below you have my translation to French. I used "Libertin" which match better than cynics. Is equivalent exists in English ?

Thoughtful poem, Orang jan! Bravo! I wish I knew the answers! But I'd like to think that each of us is partly "rend", partly "zaahed"...:-)

Dear Orang, I always like when poems get philosophical, that is why I like this poem of yours, particularly when you ask: 

گذشته زیباست

یا خیالی

I have had this experience of thinking about past fondly but then I remember that at the actual time, it was not all roses. Somehow our memory plays tricks on us. Or is it because after passage of time, we look at past and conclude that overall, certain times were good even though there were some negative aspects to them.
