Faramarz, thanks for your information
by JavoonDeerooz on Wed Nov 10, 2010 11:39 PM PSTit kind of reinforces my view of Shah, he did not think any one else, including his son is capable of running this country.
Nader Vanaki , i did not say he should have made his son the king, I said he would not trust him enough to keep him in Iran to be TRAINED to be the next king. I mean, if you own a little baghali and you know you are going to kick the bucket in next several years, you'll bring your son as Shagerd to learn the business before you die. You won't ship him off to a foreign school.

Here are a couple of data points about the atmosphere and the mindset back in the 1970's. I don't believe that the late Shah was going to survive the changes that were coming at him.
Around 1970, when Reza was 9 years old, Shah told Mr. Alam of the Imperial Court to tell Mr. Hoveyda, the Prime Minister to order the head of the Military, General Jam (Joint Chief of Staff, and the former husband of Shams Pahlavi, Shah's sister) that the Shah will be bringing Reza to official meetings and he expected everyone to kiss the 9-year-old's hand! When the late Shah and Reza arrived at the graduation ceremonies for the military officers, nobody kissed Reza's hand.
Later on Shah asked Alam and Hoveyda why nobody kissed Reza's hand and why his orders were disobeyed. General Jam told Hoveyda that he could not ask the career officers with decades of service to kiss a 9-year-old's hand. General Jam was removed from his post and became Iran's ambassador to Spain.
When Shah became aware of his cancer in mid-seventies, he brought in the sr. military people and told them that in case something happens to him in a helicopter or plane crash (he did not disclose his illness) he wants everyone to follow Shahbanoo orders. But he did not create an environment where Farah appeared to be in charge. So the whole thing did not go anywhere.
This was a one-man show and there was never a plan B.

by Cost-of-Progress on Wed Nov 10, 2010 04:06 PM PSTThe pahlavi era is a bygone era that is just that: gone.
The islamist anti nationaslist entities both in iran and on line would love nothing better than to keep playing the monarchist card to maintain the division that is natural among Iranians.
Pahlavi era was a short-lived sliver of propsperity (yeah freedom was not abundant, but how do you like your freedom now?) for our country that has been engaged in a hidden war between Iranianism and arabism for 14 centuries. That is gone now and our national identnity is in serious trouble.
What do you plan to do about that?

You can not judge a person
by PArviz on Wed Nov 10, 2010 11:35 PM PSTYou can not judge a person based solely on a letter to his child.
I am sure a torturer in Evin prison can also write very loving letters to his children. But he will, without hesitation, break the bones of someone's son or daughter or put a bullet in their brains. Does that loving letter to his child make him a good person? Surely not.
People of Iran kicked the Pahlavis out for a reason (or should I say reasons). You simply can not change the facts of history, because you want to. Just because the present bunch are a thousand times worse and more savage does not mean that Shah was good.
Why, in Iran, we are always given a choice between bad and worse? Don't we deserve better?
Down with the ENTIRE Islamic Republic!
Please solve this puzzle for me
by JavoonDeerooz on Tue Nov 09, 2010 09:56 PM PSTBy all accounts , in 1357 Shah knew that he is ill and his disease is terminal. He had already been under treatment for awhile. Why didn't he have Reza at home , grooming him to become the next king. Why would you have the heir apparent be learning how to fly jets in Texas rather than teaching him the ropes of Iranian politics? What was he thinking? Did he think Reza is not good enough to be the next King? Were Americans, as the letter implies, impressed with HRH's intelligence, or did they think "sh*t , Shah is dying and he has no one to replace him. Rather than risking chaos, why don't we give this old man in Paris a chance. At least , he is anti-communist an we already are talking to some of his associates.
What is the source of this letter?

by mahmoudg on Tue Nov 09, 2010 04:01 PM PSTand death to the current bunch, who slowly but surely are destroying the fabric of a country he so selflessly tried to build. I personally will never show my good graces towards the cult of Islam, and will spend the rest of my life ensuring that it will be removed from the fabric of the Iranian society, knowing full well it may take decades or longer, but i am willing to go that route and ensure that some day this cult will in the least just be on par with all other worthless religions.
