I don’t know if it is merely a desperate thought to make ourselves blend in with the western society or just the fact that western society has corrupted our thoughts. What happened to the people from the land of “Shahs’ and Shah Zadehs”? From our music groups “Juniors 5” singing “Team E maa” (a song about how we are suppose to take pride in our Iranian team) on a Spanish song, or the way the singers dress and look, as if they are desperately trying to look fashionable or in Sepideh’s case look like a cheap striper. I totally understand being modern and liberal, but what I don’t understand is losing yourself to another culture. I don’t take pride in our country as of right now, but I do take pride that I am Iranian and praise the Iranian culture.
As an individual who lives in America, as an American citizen, I totally value and appreciate the benefits that we have been given to me. However, is it not the beauty of this country that we can be from any culture, practice any tradition or religion and still be an American? Today more Iranians get drunk, do drugs, and dress as if they just came out of a bizarre fashion show, compare to any European or American that I have ever seen. More girls have lost their values and portray themselves as “open minded individuals” to fit in. They call their parents traditional and stand up in their face as if respect never had a meaning in our culture. They make fun of their parent’s accent, the way they talk, and dress just because they don’t look like Bill or George. But I think they are forgetting if it wasn’t for their parent’s hard work none of them would get a chance to dress half naked on Friday and Saturday nights, or in most cases the entire week, and tear up the clubs.
Our musicians/managers such as: Shahbal Shapareh, Amir Ghasemi, ShortKhis ... (sorry I really have no respect for them to even spell their names right) promote people to embarrass themselves so they can make a few bucks (not mentioning some people have close ties with the great government of Iran, working with companies like Sorosh, and many more….). These are the people that take our iranian values away and change it and sell under their own name for recognition and money. (A pure example of it the new group "Juniors 5".)
I am not much concerned about my generation, but I am worried about my kids and how much of the Iranian culture they grasp or how good their Penglish(Parsi+English) is going to be. Let’s face it more of us think that in comparison to every other culture or individual out there, we are gods of this planet, but not once we look at ourselves and see what we are becoming. A group of people who are so self centered that hate their own country man. A group of people who are so disrespectful that live in America, but call Americans foreigners (Kharejeez). A group of people with lost culture, country, values, tradition, and filled with so much corruption, who everyday fall deeper and deeper in the wells of society, which one day we are going to disappear in the darkness of it.
So let us respect the people that have given us this life, and love our parents. Be unique by being who we really are: A true Iranian who stands for its tradition and culture, and respects not only his country man, but the land that he lives in and the people within it. Why is it that we can't be the culture that we were and bring great values back to humanity again? Dorood bar fahm va danesh keh vojodash paeyeh zendegist.

Re: Madam, This the land of freedom
by seanlach on Mon Dec 10, 2007 03:54 PM PSTFirst of all its Sir.
I have to say that your ignorance is well represented in commenting the
article, because the article loudly says appreciate America and its citizens
because this land has given us great opportunities. However, the reason I
said ignorance is that you mentioned Democracy and Freedom. Maybe before
you use those terms you want to research it. Democracy? When was the last time you voted NOT republican
or democrat? Or when was last time that as an individual your vote
counted? Its called electoral college. Its called enemy combatant, its
called commerce clause, its called Patriot act, its called lobbying, it is
called politics. I am sorry they sure fooled you, just like Hitler did
thousands of people, with the freedom of speech 1st Amendment, but you might
want to research how much of that freedom is actually been given and study
constitutional law and you might change your mind. But that is not
my point. My point is that we are suppose to grab the best of each. But is the
new generation grabbing the best of each? Second, Knowledge is the key to
every door and ignorance is not a bless, its just another excuse to chug your
beer and enjoy your life, without any concern about anyone else, pretty much
being selfish. What I am talking about is respect for everyone, and not
only for one culture or one group or one land. I am talking about gaining
better values, and that means taking advantage of the greatness that America
has provided in the past 200 years and combining it with thousands and
thousands years of civilization and culture. No one is complaining, and
trust me I am enjoying my share of pie.
And I really hope that one day America can help spread democracy in Iran
and hopefully in America as well.
By the way by the title I am not referring to the time of
Shah, but as the greatness the land had for itself at one point and how every
person out there is either a prince or princess.
You and me, Amen brother!
by bahmani on Mon Dec 10, 2007 12:21 PM PSTThanks for putting an exclamation point on what I have thought for years. Great comments on sticking to our pride and taking some in our creative work as well. Unfortunately the folks you mention oft pulling the strings in creating what they have no idea people even want, are talentless habitual offenders, who need to go away and retire. They have no idea what people want, because they never have the brains to simply ask, and they push and push the same shit on a different day. They are in essence the masters at recycling our garbage! Bravo!
Forget LA kids
by XerXes (not verified) on Mon Dec 10, 2007 09:30 AM PSTForget LA kids, lost in a lala land and can't be found or returned. For cultural guidance look into the root, look inside Iran. Whether it is music, film, or books. You do this, I'll do this and some others will do the same, then we'll be fine. Iran still got it and culture is moving within an Iranian style growth. That's why IRI has not been that bad. Think if Shah was still in Iran our entire nation would be like LA style, wouldn't that be an scary thought (not for the LA kids of course). Then we would have no hope to recover. Shapareh and other junkies who call themselves artists would roam the streets as kings...I am glad that they have no place in Iran today.
In time
by Alborzi (not verified) on Mon Dec 10, 2007 07:57 AM PSTAll the minorities went through a cruel initial greeting by red necks. The Japanese were rounded up, the blacks were slaved and Jews, Italians, Irish .... also had very unjust initial
time, In time the Iranians will get their well deserved position while the red necks are playing with their cousin.
REPLY : SHAHS & SHAHSADEHS
by Faribors Maleknasri M.D. (not verified) on Mon Dec 10, 2007 04:13 AM PSTit is true that those times are since more than nearly 30 years over. The devils are gone. some were even made gone. however those times were not the bests for iranian musicians, Poeple of Arts of all kind were suffering. GUGUSH had allways to do with courts other Women in showbis were made to whores by Army Generals and at least one Shahsadeh. At that time wrote TOFIGH: It is not right that the raper and the murderer have been only one person. they have been 3. First SHAHPUR 2. GHOLAM 3. RESA. Since then was TOFIGH not any moor available. Then they killed her. afterwards was the same deklaration given as was given to Murder on TAKHTI and his Death. No, sorry! those times were not so nice as we want them now to have been. The fact is that the past times seem to have been allways much nicer. Not without reason the Iranians - i mean the ones who live in IRI, have founded it and will protect it - have the speech: JAVANI KOJAII KE YADAT BE KHAIR. In reallity it is the youth that the elders miss and not the good old times. Greeting
Assimilation vs Acculturation
by Sasha on Mon Dec 10, 2007 12:34 AM PSTI personally prefer acculturation to the North American culture than assimilation into it. The younger generation needs to take the best of both of their cultures. I am a 1/2 generation American citizen and still hold to many of the traditions of my culture. I am in fact fluent in both English and my naitive language.
However, my sons are not fluent and at first did not want to learn their native language. Thankfully in high school they finally did accept to take Spanish classes but they have been influenced a little too much by some of the media in how to dress, talk and act.
It is when they grow older that they will learn to value and respect more of their native culture. What you speak of is happening within all ethnic groups at the moment.

Madam, This is the land of
by Conte Monte de Cristo (not verified) on Sun Dec 09, 2007 10:53 PM PSTMadam,
This is the land of freedom and our daughters are doing a very good thing to walk as you have described and to dress as you have portrayed and to behave as you have shown.
Our boys are born here so they are doing very well in whatever they do.
It is time that we start respecting the values bestowed on us in democracy and stop criticizing what can not and should not be reversed.
Furtheremore, we do intend to establish the same trend of democracy in Iran soon as we have well done it in Iraq.
So please do not complain and enjoy your share of the pie!
Yours in honor,
Conte Monte de Cristo
