In an unprecedented action The International Criminal Court in The Hague has just indicted a sitting head of state with five counts including crime against humanity, torture and rape. In their statement the court has declared it does not recognize immunity for a head of state and asked all countries to cooperate with the court. An arrest warrant has been issued for Sudan’s President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir, an old ally of the Islamic Republic.

Hope
by DW Duke on Wed Mar 04, 2009 10:59 PM PSTYes, this is a very important development. As the criminals in Iran have been forewarned, they will also be indicted in a similar fashion. The key is not in showing thousands of unprovable cases due to lack of evidence, but in showing one provable case on which an indictment can be predicated. One has to link the leader to the crime.
Lets Hope

Interesting development
by News Goffer on Wed Mar 04, 2009 08:46 AM PSTYes, this is extremely important because it is unprecedented. Some day there will be international accountability for all leaders of the world to treat the nations under their rule fairly and humanely or face the consequences.
Whether any pragmatic steps will be taken to actually arrest and try Al-Bashir remains to be seen.
Interestingly enough, Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani for whom arrest warrants were issued in the case Iranian Kurd leaders' assassinations in Berlin in 1992, continues to make his rounds outside of Iran, whether it is to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or this week to Iraq to negotiate with Iraqi leaders. I guess it's one thing to have a warrant on a leader and it is another to actually implement it.
