I don't think he left Iran

I don't think he left Iran with the intention of defection. Not right-away anyway. It's hard to believe he thought of his family as an afterthought. And he was not abducted either. He was 'approached' I'd say and he didn't impose his own agenda. From there, everything got out of his control.

But he is alive and well, back to Iran with his family. That's the important thing.

"But in the US, unnamed officials and security sources are claiming that Mr Amiri defected and was put into a programme similar to a witness-protection.
Later, he apparently became concerned for family members he had left behind, had a breakdown and decided to return to Iran, US reports claim.
A US official told the BBC: "He provided useful information to the United States. The Iranians now have him. In terms of win-loss, it's not even a close call."

يک مقام اطلاعاتی آمريکا می‌گويد شهرام اميری با دريافت بيش از "۵ ميليون دلار" "اطلاعات مفيدی" را در اختيار سازمان اطلاعات مرکزی آمريکا، سيا، قرار داده است.

روزنامه‌ی واشينگتن پست به نقل از اين مقام اطلاعاتی آمريکا می‌نويسد که به دليل تحريم‌های مالی‌ای که عليه ايران اعمال شده است، آقای اميری امکان دسترسی به اين پول را نخواهد داشت.

در گزارش روزنامه‌ی واشنگتن پست در مورد بازگشت شهرام اميری به ايران، به نقل از يک مقام اطلاعاتی آمريکا همچنين آمده است «او مصّر بود خانواده‌اش را ببيند و متأسفانه راه احمقانه‌ای را انتخاب کرد».

فيليپ کراولی،سخنگوی وزارت خارجه آمريکا، بدون توضيح در مورد وضعيت اقامت شهرام اميری تنها به اين نکته بسنده کرد که وی به خواست خود در اين کشور بود و به خواست خود خاک آمريکا را ترک کرد.

I agree with Mammad, also, IRI put pressure via family to return

him back.  Now, he is a puppet of IRI who will repeat whatever IRI wants, including reports of his torture by CIA.  My guess is that he will disappear within a few weeks from the scenes, after IRI "de-brief" him.

Come on guys!

First of all, the idea that he was a double agent and was sent here by IRI Ministry of Intelligence is silly.

Secondly, most of you miss the point here: Amiri was enticed to defect because the CIA thought that he knew much, but he did not. The very fact that he had been allowed to leave Iran to go to SA already indicated that he did not know much.

Third, Iran's nuclear work has been compartmentized since many years ago, so that anyone who works on a project knows only about that project. So, again, Amiri could not know much. He was probably aware of the Fordow facility near Qom, but nothing else.

At the end, he turned out to be useless and an embarrassment to the US (at the beginning the US denied knowing anything). At the same time, he could not get his family out. So, he had to go back.

AN Iranian who claimed he was abducted by US spies last year has today denied that he is a nuclear scientist as he arrived in Tehran.
Shahram Amiri, who vanished from Saudi Arabia in June 2009 and surfaced in Washington this week, told reporters upon his arrival in Tehran that he was just a “simple researcher”.
“I had nothing to with Natanz and Fordo sites,” he said referring to Iran's two uranium enrichment sites.
“It was a tool the US government brought up for political pressure. I have done no research on nuclear. I am a simple researcher who works in a university which is open to all and there is no secret work happening there.”
Before leaving Washington yesterday, where he had taken refuge the previous day in Iran's Interests Section office, Mr Amiri told the Iranian Press TV channel he would describe his "ordeal" to local media on reaching Tehran.

Shahram Amiri, a double agent?

Niloufar, I doubt very much that the Iranian intelligence authorities have the knowhow or the courage to send a double agent into the hands of Americans!  Unless he was a suicide-nuclear scientist-agent, prepared not to leave the US alive.  He just doesn't look/act the part, I'm afraid.

Honestly, does any of what we have been seeing show any kind of well-planned, intelligent scheme or execution thereof?  The stuff we have seen is the making of some of the funniest satire and comedy, just waiting to get written!

If you believe that Shahram Amiri is truly suffering from MPD, that's fine - I really don't know what to say :)

P.S. I guess we can use the same diagnosis for many unexplainables - I personally believe that his actions are based on much more tangible and concrete issues, rather than an intangible and an abstratct case of suffering from MPD .....

صبح روز چهارشنبه، 23 تیر (14 ژوئیه)، رامین مهمانپرست، سخنگوی وزارت امور خارجه ایران، اعلام کرد که "با تلاش های انجام شده از سوی جمهوری اسلامی ایران و همکاری موثر سفارت پاکستان در واشنگتن، لحظاتی قبل شهرام امیری خاک آمریکا را از طریق کشور ثالث به مقصد جمهوری اسلامی ایران ترک کرد."

در واکنش به این گزارش ها، رابرت گیبز، سخنگوی دفتر رئیس جمهوری آمریکا، با رد هر نوع ارتباطی بین ماجرای حضور آقای امیری در آمریکا و بازداشت شهروندان آمریکایی در ایران، گفت "ما او [شهرام امیری] را نگه نداشته ایم و بنابراین، هیچ مبادله ای در کار نیست."

Why would they bring him to the USA?

If it was really about tkidnapping him and getting secret's they would have just tortured him in Saudi Arabia or taken him to Abu Gharibe or Gitmo,a plane,a aircraft carrier etc.There was no need to bring him to the USA and put him on the news.

The 'Free' US has a very old policy to help people defect from oppressive regimes.Try looking up Russian,N.Korean and Chinese defectors.And Once you defect,you're still free to leave.

He is a Dead Man

I think he 100% defected. The regime went after his nephew, sister, parents, and anyone else they could get their hands on. And then they sent him a voice mail of his mother screaming begging for her life. They tell him if he wants to see his mother alive he not only has to return to iran to face the music but also cooperate in this elaborate propaganda for the uneducated peasants and fanatical basij to swallow back home. More political points that you either support the ever divine Khamenei or your with America the "great satan" who kidnaps innocent Hajj pilgrims. So Shahram having little choice goes along with it and posts a bunch of youtube videos , evades the FBI, evades the CIA, and manages to get into a Pakistani embassy.  ---yah right.   Bet u anything this guy will be greeted with flowers at Tehran Airport, hailed as a hero, and dead within 2 yrs from mysterious stroke or heart attack !

West's hoped-for Iranian "Vanunu" moment fizzles

Perhaps he's a brilliant scientist, like Prof. Einstein, who's lost without his wife to pin a note on his lapel telling the bus driver to be sure to let her husband off at the University. In any case, it has to be a given, we, the US, were absolutely counting on a "Vanunu" moment, which obviously was not forthcoming.

United States must have some kind of proofs of Amiri volunteray coming to their door and asking for asylum. Some papers he signed a recorded interview. If not already in Iran, this guy is on his way to Iran only to say more of what he saying in this clip(press tv). Of course, Iran would get embarrased if Americans come up with undeniable evidences on their claim about Aamiri.

I just watched Rachel Maddow show.......its analysis is that IRI wants to prevent defections from happening in the future....IRI wants to send a message to the potential defectors that if you want to defect......we are going to give your family members hard time......so you have to return to Iran......
