After weeks of far-fetched news and video clips about and by "the missing Iranian nuclear scientist," Shahram Amiri, Iranian state news websites announced today that Shahram Amiri has managed to get himself to the Iranian Interests Section of the Pakistani Embassy in Washington DC. He has asked to be returned to Iran immediately, according to the news.
What do you think the real scoop with Shahram Amiri is?
Was he abducted by Saudi agents and turned over to US agents, the way the Iranian government has claimed all along?
Did he apply for political asylum from the US in Saudi Arabia?
Was he/is he really in the US?
Was he really in Tuscon, Arizona, the way he claimed in one of the video recordings?
Was he really trying to pursue his education, the way he claimed in another one of the video clips?
If he was abducted, how did he manage to get himself to a computer, internet, and a webcam several times to record the video clips or to call the Iranian Ministry of Information?
How did he get from Tuscon to Washington DC?

I don't think he left Iran
by benross on Thu Jul 15, 2010 02:11 PM PDTI don't think he left Iran with the intention of defection. Not right-away anyway. It's hard to believe he thought of his family as an afterthought. And he was not abducted either. He was 'approached' I'd say and he didn't impose his own agenda. From there, everything got out of his control.
But he is alive and well, back to Iran with his family. That's the important thing.
BBC: Amiri left protection program
by Shifteh Ansari on Thu Jul 15, 2010 01:39 PM PDT"But in the US, unnamed officials and security sources are claiming that Mr Amiri defected and was put into a programme similar to a witness-protection.
Later, he apparently became concerned for family members he had left behind, had a breakdown and decided to return to Iran, US reports claim.
A US official told the BBC: "He provided useful information to the United States. The Iranians now have him. In terms of win-loss, it's not even a close call."

I agree with Mammad, also, IRI put pressure via family to return
by MM on Thu Jul 15, 2010 08:26 AM PDThim back. Now, he is a puppet of IRI who will repeat whatever IRI wants, including reports of his torture by CIA. My guess is that he will disappear within a few weeks from the scenes, after IRI "de-brief" him.
Come on guys!
by Mammad on Thu Jul 15, 2010 08:14 AM PDTFirst of all, the idea that he was a double agent and was sent here by IRI Ministry of Intelligence is silly.
Secondly, most of you miss the point here: Amiri was enticed to defect because the CIA thought that he knew much, but he did not. The very fact that he had been allowed to leave Iran to go to SA already indicated that he did not know much.
Third, Iran's nuclear work has been compartmentized since many years ago, so that anyone who works on a project knows only about that project. So, again, Amiri could not know much. He was probably aware of the Fordow facility near Qom, but nothing else.
At the end, he turned out to be useless and an embarrassment to the US (at the beginning the US denied knowing anything). At the same time, he could not get his family out. So, he had to go back.

This explains EVERYTHING! It was a case of mistaken identity!

Iranian Shahram Amiri denies being nuclear scientist on return to Tehran
AN Iranian who claimed he was abducted by US spies last year has today denied that he is a nuclear scientist as he arrived in Tehran.
Shahram Amiri, who vanished from Saudi Arabia in June 2009 and surfaced in Washington this week, told reporters upon his arrival in Tehran that he was just a “simple researcher”.
“I had nothing to with Natanz and Fordo sites,” he said referring to Iran's two uranium enrichment sites.
“It was a tool the US government brought up for political pressure. I have done no research on nuclear. I am a simple researcher who works in a university which is open to all and there is no secret work happening there.”
Before leaving Washington yesterday, where he had taken refuge the previous day in Iran's Interests Section office, Mr Amiri told the Iranian Press TV channel he would describe his "ordeal" to local media on reaching Tehran.

"My abduction is a detailed story," he said. "I think I will be
unable to get into details during this limited period of time and I
will postpone it to when I am hopefully in my dear country Iran, so I can
speak to the media and my own people with ease of mind and tell them about
my ordeal over the past 14 months, incidents that have been a mystery to
many.
"In Iran, I will thoroughly clarify the allegations made by foreign
media and the US government which, in fact, have targeted my reputation."
American officials and Hillary Clinton, the secretary of state, have all
denied that Mr Amiri had been kidnapped in Saudi Arabia and
transferred to the United States against his will by the CIA, as Iran claims.
"He's free to go. He was free to come. These decisions are his alone to
make," Mrs Clinton said.
Officials refused to confirm that he had co-operated, whether
voluntarily or
not, with the CIA in revealing details of Iran's nuclear programme.
Intelligence-related websites have stated that Mr Amiri, a scientist
who worked at a Tehran university but also for the Iranian Atomic Energy
Organisation, provided information on a secret uranium enrichment
facility near the holy city of Qom.
He had disappeared while on a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia in late May
last year. He told another Iranian reporter that he had been offered a lift
to a mosque in the city of Medina by three men.
Inside their van, a gun was put to his side and he was told to keep
quiet.
Former CIA officers have briefed news outlets that he was not abducted.
They say his family were used by the Iranian authorities to put pressure on
him to return home. He is married with a son.
Shahram Amiri, a double agent?
by Shifteh Ansari on Wed Jul 14, 2010 11:52 AM PDTNiloufar, I doubt very much that the Iranian intelligence authorities have the knowhow or the courage to send a double agent into the hands of Americans! Unless he was a suicide-nuclear scientist-agent, prepared not to leave the US alive. He just doesn't look/act the part, I'm afraid.
Honestly, does any of what we have been seeing show any kind of well-planned, intelligent scheme or execution thereof? The stuff we have seen is the making of some of the funniest satire and comedy, just waiting to get written!

Off he goes... (From BBC Persian)
by Shifteh Ansari on Wed Jul 14, 2010 12:15 AM PDTوزارت خارجه ایران: شهرام امیری از آمریکا خارج شد
