by afshin on Mon Aug 08, 2011 10:31 AM PDTIn my lifetime in Tehran there were areas that did not have running water and electricity, illiteracy was at a staggering rate of over 40%, people lived in unimaginable poverty. Within 10 years, all of Tehran had running water, poverty was gradually dissipating with an ever growing middle class, illiteracy was falling, more and more people had disposable income, one could travel as a tourist with an Iranian passport without a visa throughout much of the common market and the economy had double digit growth throughout much of the Shah's last 15 years in power. Hoveyda (a patriot who drove to work in his own Peykan) was once asked what was the crowning achievement of his premiership. His answer was simple and concise, "When I first came to power a book of matches was 3 shahi, and it remains so 12 years later." The Shah may have been too far ahead for his time, he may have been extravagant, he may have had his excesses, and yes there was definitely corruption in his court of power. But of one thing there should never be any shred of doubt, is that he was a patriot. He loved Iran, and wanted what was best for it. And if you look at modern Iranian history over the past few centuries, more was done to advance Iran during his 37 years of power than any other time.
While the Shah was visiting that nuclear facility in France, trying to diversify Iran's sources of energy in the 1960s, Khomeini was giving fatwas and speeches protesting women's right to vote, and the concept of diplomatic immunity of American service personnel in Iran. Such is the ocean that sets apart what was and what has become of Iran. May he rest in peace. Roohash shad.
