An Iranian athlete refused to shake the Duchess of Cambridge's hand

An Iranian athlete refused to shake the Duchess of Cambridge's hand after she presented him with his discus silver medal on Sunday. The Royal was warmly received on the podium by Paralympic GB's gold medal winner Aled Davies and Chinese bronze medallist Lezheng Wang. But when it was Mehrdad Karam Zadeh's turn to step up, the 40-year-old failed to offer a hand to the Duchess, clutching them close to his chest.

His decision not to shake hands with the Duchess was likely to have been a result of Iranian cultural convention which bans such contact between unrelated men and women. The Duchess appeared to have been briefed on the situation, because she did not offer her hand either. The incident threatened to overshadow a glittering night for Paralympics GB, which enjoyed its most successful day of the Games so far with seven gold medals.

Did anyone notice how the medal bearer had a hard time taking his eyes off of the dutchess's royally awsome knockers?

I happen to think that this was all part a pre-arranged deal and i saw a report where they spotted her drop-dead gorgeousness knocking at his door that same night.

Faramarz:

now you have a choice to make. the scientologists or the dutchess and her girlfriends.

Modern protocol vs defunct rituals

by alimostofi on

T: you used this phrase "Iranian cultural convention". Surely you meant to say "Islamic ritual". Please note that no culture has such disrespect, but there are many gangs and cults that do have such absurd rituals and no humanitarian respect.

All humans are equal, and just because your gender is different, that does not allow you to have a different greeting protocol. Many cults are based dividing humans, by making fundamental changes to basic human greeting protocols. I don't use a religious greeting ever. I say dorood and bedrood. Moslems bring religion into it.

But look at how modern social networking has completely changed all that, and will continue to bring people together. It is the Age of Aquarius!

"Woman! Do you have permission from your husband to be outside the house? Or is your husband bi-gheirat???!! Is he bi-naamoos?????!" (....at this point the guards start dragging him away as he keeps shouting Islamic profanities)

I have no desire to kiss the Queen's hand, but Kate and her sister look like a lot of fun!

anglophile

It is not the correct etiquette to kiss the Queen's hand

by anglophile on

    • Royal etiquette

Learn from mistakes in the past. Don't say "pleased to meet you." That's thought to be redundant because everyone is pleased to meet the Queen. It is also considered bad manners to chew gum around the queen, put an arm around her, kiss her hand, turn your back on her, or continue to eat once she has stopped.

Brain washing

by MRX on

30+ years of brain washing by islamists has affected some people's thinking  in islamic paradise wheather we like it or not. one day they don't shake hand with women another day with jews, next day they don't participate in a match. List goes on and on.....

I always said post IRI who ever or what ever regime comes to power, will have their hands full just trying to bring up the society to 1979 level, never mind 2012 and beyond!

Duchess or not, doesn't make any difference

by Rea on

She's simply used to a handshake. Like most human beings are.

At the same time, he's a poor fellow who has to go back to IRI. Unless, there is a country willing to give him political asylum.

So, let's not judge too harshly, it's not his fault.

Hypocrisy

by anglophile on

If a man must practise the "Islamic" code of conduct in its strict sense he must not lay his eyes on an "unrelated" (na-mahram) female, let alone allowing her to get so close to him to hang a medal around his neck (hence touching him). Once the code is breached, then there is no point in withdrawing his hand. Hypocritical behaviour.

In any case, it was Karam-Zadeh's loss to miss an opportuinty to shake hands with the beautiful Duchess.
