And that's exactly what it is, a description and NOT an analysis of the situation! I don't believe some folks understand the difference.
P.S.
by Tiger Lily on Tue Jan 31, 2012 04:40 PM PSTthat comment about TheRealNews is so beyond somewhere in some pathetically beyond the gutter, that I really can't be bothered to refute it. But then that's like many comments here on Ic. 'Just can't be bothered.

by Tiger Lily on Tue Jan 31, 2012 03:52 PM PSTI'm not even a hard-fast fan of Dabashi, but in this interview, he very simply precisely describes the status quo.
As for Eyrabs. What a pity that Eyeranians have such an inferiority complex of a chip on their shoulder, very contrary to so many interviewed, the ordinary people of many Arab nations, who only wish ordinary Iranians well,
especially in all their struggles.
Drop the blatant racism and idiotic, corruption of character assassinations, and maybe one day
Mr Dabashi's analysis

@ Omid Parsi on Dabashi
by Disenchanted on Mon Jan 30, 2012 09:03 PM PSTOmid,
You keep piling insults and criticism on Dabashi without any substance. It sounds more like a personal vendetta than anything else! May be you know something but you are not telling! But on the face of it, it seems just some personal grudge going back to your days in academia as you eluded to it.
There is nothing in this interview (video) that justifies such vicious attacks by you on the credibility and quality of Mr. Dabashi's work.
If your intention goes beyond bad mouthing and settling some scores you need to bring more substance to the table.
Your statement:
"As for RealNews, it appears to be a hack job, involving a desk, a laptop w/ web cam and a Skype connection, operated by a few empty suits in search of a more respectable job in journalism. Exactly the kind of outfit that a self-respecting scholar would not associate with."
is oblivious to the fact that if we belittle likes of realNews we are left with likes of FOX news and rest of crap fed to people minds by Mr. Murdock and his ilk! The fact that CNN & FOX & ABC never talk to likes of chomsky says more about them than Chomsky's scholarly work!
Dear Mash Ghassem (!!)
by Omid Parsi on Mon Jan 30, 2012 05:40 PM PSTDear Mash Ghassem (!!)
You hit the nail in the head… but you are the nail!!
I was not going to dignify your mean diatribe by responding, but then my liberal (“khalghi/abgooshti”!!) side got the better of me! So here it is:
It probably did not occur to you that I might personally know Mr Dabashi rather well from my years in academia. You would be proud to know that there are still certain deep-thinking countrymen of yours with scholarly background who are not fully engaged in looking for “moreed”!!
As it happens, knowing about and minding what happens in the world, not just the wretched Middle East, is kind of like my day job. However I don’t get a chance to write books or regurgitate consensus geopolitical views on YouTube, as I have to watch hundreds of millions of dollars of investments (among which there may even be a portion of your meager 401K or Mr. Dabashi’s!) whose returns depend on just having the informed worldview (geopolitical, economic, financial, meteorological, you name it) and decisively acting upon it.
It is an interesting attribute of Iranians to proudly suck up to their tonsils to any two bit talking head who dabbles in some jargon and act as unpaid mercenaries on their behalf, whether they are turbaned heads talking on a “manbar” (aka mullahs) or other self-proclaimed "initellectuals" (in the tradition of Shariati or Soroush) residing in faculties and, now of course, the internet (RealNews!!).
Part of my hard-earned survivalist worldview is that certain cultural attributes, like the aforementioned, though hopefully not immutable, don’t change so much from one generation to the next. That is why I would rather make $$ than talk, so that when you and the next generation of our people "hit the fan" I shall remain unaffected and have a laugh.
As for RealNews, it appears to be a hack job, involving a desk, a laptop w/ webcam and a Skype connection, operated by a few empty suits in search of a more respectable job in journalism. Exactly the kind of outfit that a self-respecting scholar would not associate with.
I believe you'd still be better served with mainstream media. If you really care about geopolitics, there are numerous policy thank tanks listed in: thinktanks.fpri.org. Knock yourself out.
I really do not care about Arabs
by amirkabear4u on Mon Jan 30, 2012 09:20 AM PSTI really do not care what are Arabs up to.
Iran ia a big country and maybe we should all concentrate on it.
Fair & objective!

Omid Parsi, you are far worse
by Mash Ghasem on Sun Jan 29, 2012 07:13 PM PSTShame on you for being so arrogant, and ignorant.
You monarchists can't exactly say what he says on this interview that's so comical or charlatanesque, but nonethless you can curse, insult and keep you 'in-depth' observations under two, two lines paragraphs.
Well sonny boy, you sound like an incredibly obtuse character assasinating charlatan to me.
At least he has wrriten twenty books, writes a column for Al Ahram, and can coherently argue a point in a paragraph. Can you do any of that? You charlatan.
Dabashi is a Charlatan ...
by Omid Parsi on Sun Jan 29, 2012 07:00 PM PSTDabashi is a poorly disguised b.s. artist. A 3rd rate wannabe journalist passing himself as an expert, intellectual and social scientist.
Shame on Columbia University, or rather the whole collective social science racket (Iranian Studies?!!), for sustaining charlatans of this nature...
MG, you're welcome
by Tiger Lily on Sun Jan 29, 2012 04:32 PM PSTThat's sort of what I was thinking: precisely packed.
P.S. Usually I totally ignore that thing, by excercising enormous amount of compassion . I don't read the Iranian Hello Magazine blogs (must be thousands of them) with endless crap and have to scroll down for ages passed the endless comments, just like so many other fellow sufferers. I just sometimes, very rarely end up there by just clicking on someone's comments.
Then might as well not come and spam on my blogs kiddo
