Dear Persian/Iranian Brethren,
I have just started teaching a design class, in which I have 2 Persian/American students in my class. I myself am extremely hearing impaired and at times, even get hung-up with the correct pronunciation of more western type names. Can someone help with the proper Persian/Iranian pronunciation of Danial (male) and Kamilah (female). I'm a stickler of pronouncing names the way their families intended to have them pronounced, regardless of what country your in.
Any comments would be most welcomed.
Respectfully,
Tyler Blik (pronounced Blick) ; )

My $0.02
by Esther on Fri Sep 03, 2010 09:58 AM PDTI am not a Farsi speaker, but my $0.02: first, be careful of the vowels (even if you say "da like dog", pronunciation may vary wildly depending on where you live (or learned your English)). Second, be careful of the stress (I notice that English speakers often place the stress near the beginning or middle of the word, where Farsi speakers will place it closer to the end, but maybe some Farsi speaker can give you a more exact rule - at least in the cases of Danial and Kamilah :).
Thank you for the quick
by Tyler Blik on Thu Sep 02, 2010 05:11 PM PDTThank you for the quick reply Faramarz! OK, I'm going to take a stab at yours... How about Fah-ra-mahz...?
Ghadimi - Gah-dee-me ...?
Thanks again!

Dear Tyler - Danial and Kamilah
by Faramarz on Thu Sep 02, 2010 04:08 PM PDTDanial is a relatively popular Jewish name in Iran. it means God is my judge (I looked it up!) It is pronounced Da (like dog) Nial (like knee-all). My classmate in Iran was called Dani (Daani).
Kamilah is of Arabic origin. The Iranian version is Kamila. That would be Ka (like car) Mila (like me love!)
Now, if you can figure out how to say Faramarz, Jahanshah Javid or Hamsade Ghadimi, then you are on the right track!
Best of luck to you!
