Romney's debate tactic called Gish Gallup
by vildemose on Thu Oct 04, 2012 01:22 PM PDTThe Urban Dictionary defines the Gish Gallop thusly:
Named for the debate tactic created by creationist shill Duane Gish, a Gish Gallop involves spewing so much bullshit in such a short span on that your opponent can’t address let alone counter all of it. To make matters worse a Gish Gallop will often have one or more 'talking points' that has a tiny core of truth to it, making the person rebutting it spend even more time debunking it in order to explain that, yes, it's not totally false but the Galloper is distorting/misusing/misstating the actual situation. A true Gish Gallop generally has two traits.
1) The factual and logical content of the Gish Gallop is pure bullshit and anybody knowledgeable and informed on the subject would recognize it as such almost instantly. That is, the Gish Gallop is designed to appeal to and deceive precisely those sorts of people who are most in need of honest factual education.
2) The points are all ones that the Galloper either knows, or damn well should know, are totally bullshit. With the slimier users of the Gish Gallop, like Gish himself, its a near certainty that the points are chosen not just because the Galloper knows that they're bullshit, but because the Galloper is deliberately trying to shovel as much bullshit into as small a space as possible in order to overwhelm his opponent with sheer volume and bamboozle any audience members with a facade of scholarly acumen and factual knowledge.
It is quite apparent to those of us who have closely followed this election, that this latest sketch drawn out by Romney completely contradicts major policy ideas stumped on the campaign trail by him over the last few months. Since Obama could no longer debate the substance (or lack thereof) of Romney''s policy ideas, it threw Obama off his game. We have seen Romney do this before in the primaries. Obama needs to be prepared for it in future debates. Call it Etch-A-Sketch, call it the Gish Gallop, call it lies...it's all about the same. But it is a known debate tactic. And, like Romney, it is dishonest.
ON EDIT: Top of the rec list! Wow! Thanks! Just FYI, in the intro, I provided a hyperlink to the wiki explanation of the Gish Gallop, just in case you are looking for more information on it.
On a happier note, please allow me to share this joke floating around the internet today:
Snow White, Superman and Pinocchio are walking along.
They see a sign: "Contest for World's Most Beautiful Woman." Snow White goes in, later comes out smiling, wearing a crown.
They walk along and see another sign: "Contest for World's Strongest Man." Superman goes in, later comes out smiling, wearing the belt.
They walk along and see a sign: "Contest for World's Greatest Liar." Pinocchio goes in, later comes out with his head down crying.
"Who the hell is Mitt Romney?" Pinocchio sobs.

"As I watched this evening, all I could think is Romney is presenting as historical fact the very things he hasn't said or done and is quoting non-existant facts in support of his positions. "His health care plan" does this and that...and yet there has been no explanation of his plan. The man is a walking, talking, stack of lies and hypocrisy. He has no position except that he will say whatever he thinks will help him win.
Obama can't say it, so I will. Romney is a liar. How does one debate a man who has no scruples and without calling him down on his lies? This is how low information voters get turned to Romney...and he did a good job of it. Damn! ""
Spending all his time "correcting" romney would have been horrible optics and he wouldn't have gotten any of his ideas forward.
Hopefully, the low information voters did not watch the debate. Because Lying works on them and the Republicans know this. The simple fact is that Republicans are just that much more practiced at lying. You can lie to people you don't think are intelligent enough to tell the difference.

Romney did well but OU BA MA NEEST will still win ...
by Darius Kadivar on Thu Oct 04, 2012 11:54 AM PDTPeople won't be voting for their President next November ... They will be voting under Influence ... They will THINK that they are actually making their own independant choice but in reality it's one dictated by Media Corporations feeding them With arguments endorsed by Popular Humorists who have their own party card membership to the Democratic Convention ( Jon Stewart, Samuel Jackson, Saturday Night Live, Colbert Show, Bill Maher, etc ...) ... I can guarantee you as much as Sarkozy Lost unfairly due to the Media Bias against Him ... Obama on the other hand will actually win next november and come out smelling like a rose ... thanks to the same biased media corporations highjacking what should normally be the natural course of a democratic process yet instead acting as Coaches and Not as analysts ...
Take this for instance:
The above "analysis" is actually a Very Subtle and effective Pro Obama Propaganda ...
give the impression Obama lost the debate but that he is far more legitimate than his opponent Romney ...
Corporate medias are not aimed at being objective they are paid to do Propaganda for their challenger ... Be it Fox TV ( Less Subtle or not Subtle at all ) or MSNBC (More Demagogue) ... This is not democracy it's Corporate Media Shaping Public Opinion one way or another ...
And this is the 'Democracy' which Folks in the Arab and Muslim world actually THINK ( under influence) they are fighting and dying for ? ... Thinking it's Progress ? ...

However, given his psychopatic liar opponent, Romney, he did the best he could to stay calm. I counted Romney's lies but gave up to list them all because they were so many.
I found ROmney frightening, like a psychopath. He came off like a major bully and pathological liar willing to do and say anything to win -- the essence of a psychopath.
I suspect a lot of people found him similarly terrifying. Simple mental math showed what he was saying could not be true.He changed his positions chameleonly.
Thoug, too many people (low-information voters) are swayed by overconfident bullies. Psychopaths garner followers all the time.

Complete remarks can be found here.
When I got on the stage, I met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be Mitt Romney.
But it couldn't have been Mitt Romney, because the real Mitt Romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy. The fellow on stage last night said he didn't know anything about that.
The real Mitt Romney said we don't need any more teachers in our classrooms, but
the fellow on stage last night, he loves teachers, can't get enough of them.
The Mitt Romney we all know invested in companies that were called pioneers of outsourcing jobs to other countries, but the guy on stage last night said he doesn't even know that there were such laws that encourage outsourcing. He's never heard of them!
Never heard of tax breaks for companies that shift jobs overseas? He said that if it's true he must need a new accountant.
Now, we know for sure it was not the real Mitt Romney because he seems to be doing just fine with his current accountant.
So, you see, the man on stage last night does not want to be held accountable for the real Mitt Romney's decisions and what he's been saying for the last year. And that's because he knows full well that we don't want what he's been selling for the last year.
So Governor Romney may dance around his positions, but if you want to be president you owe the American people the truth.
So here's the truth: Governor Romney cannot cannot pay for his $5 trillion tax plan his tax plan without blowing up the deficit or sticking it to the middle class. That's the math.
We can't afford to go down that road again. We can't afford another round of budget busting tax cuts for the wealthy. We can't afford to gut our investments in education or clean energy or research and technology.
We can't afford to roll back regulations on Wall Street, or oil companies, or insurance companies. We cannot afford to double down on the same top down economic policies that got us into this mess. That is not a plan to create jobs. That is not a plan to grow the economy. That is not a plan to create change. That is a relapse. We don't want to go back there. We've tried it. It didn't work and we are not going back. We are going forward.
Washington post is on Romney and his lies this morning.
