Total to continue Iran projects

A senior Total official says the French energy giant is interested in continuing cooperation with Iran in its oil and gas sectors.

In a letter to Iranian Oil Minister Gholam-Hossein Nozari, Total Chief Executive Christophe de Margerie rejected recent reports on Total’s withdrawal from South Pars gas field, describing them as political propaganda, Mehr news agency quoted an unnamed Total official as saying.

“Total’s stance on Iran is quite clear. We are interested in continuing our activities,” Mehr quoted the official as saying.

De Margerie told The Financial Times on July 10 that Total had pulled out of a project to develop Phase 11 of Iran’s South Pars gas field due to its political risk.

Nozari said on Friday that Iran would develop energy projects in South Pars with or without the help of foreign firms.

The Managing Director of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), Seyfollah Jashnsaz, also said on Tuesday that Total has officially announced it will carry out its commitments to Iran’s oil industry.
