At Iran-Afghan border, dreams come undone

Since 2002, Iran has deported 360,000 Afghans at Islam Qala border, 75 miles west of Herat, according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Hundreds of thousands more have been expelled at the border crossing in the southern Nimroz province.  Most deportees are men like Haddan who travel alone seeking work. And many took the chance — leaving their families behind — to flee the faltering security and rising unemployment in Afghanistan that has plagued the country since the fall of the Taliban seven years ago.
