As usual Maria came to the store to buy her daily chocolate bar and as usual she started chatting away about something that was occupying her mind that day. So she began telling us the story about a bottle of unopened vodka she had found under her bed that morning. The exact brand her husband drank day and night and probably because of it died, around eight years ago.
She had gone to bed very sad the night before thinking how lonely she was. Being mateless all day and all night every day of her life since her husbands had passed on. She had quietly cried herself to sleep. The next morning after examining her puffy eyes in the mirror she had turned around and seen the unopened bottle lying by the foot of her bed. She does not drink and her son who lives with her had no idea who had placed the bottle there. She was certain that her husband’s ghost had seen her crying the night before and to show her that she was not alone, and that he was there with her in spirit, he had left the bottle there.
She also told us that her house was full of walking ghosts, and like herself, the people in the two upper floors had many times seen or heard ghosts walking the hallways and opening and shutting closet doors in the kitchen and the bedrooms.
I asked maria if ghosts scared her. She smiled and said that in her sixty years of living she had never been hurt by any dead people. It was the live ones that she was afraid of.
