Obama suffers embarrassing defeat on Gitmo funding

Give Kansas Sam Brownback credit for leading a rare and successful Republican rebuff of President Barack Obama.

Brownback and the Senate today denied funding the closure of the Guantanamo prison and transferring at least some of the alleged terrorists there to Fort Leavenworth in Kansas.

Brownback claims the famed Fort Leavenworth prison “is not equipped to handle the detainee mission.”

Other critics simply think bringing the alleged terrorists into the country would ratchet up the possibility of attacks on local cities where the prisoners were held.

Whether that makes make sense is open to question.

And at least some Democrats continue to back Obama. They say Gitmo has been a huge mistake, especially because of the alleged torture that occurred there against inmates.

But based on today’s vote, it’s apparent Congress does not yet have the will to make a decision to close Gitmo — especially when Obama hasn’t outlined a good plan of what would happen with its prisoners.

That’s supposed to come in a speech on Thursday.

But that will be too late to stop Brownback and the GOP from embarrassing the president with their Gitmo vote today.
