MON CINEMA: Kismet in Cinemascope (1955)

Like a tale spun by Schehrazade, Kismet follows the remarkable and repeated changes of fortune that engulf a poor Persian poet. It all happens in one incredible day when Kismet (Fate) takes a hand.

The Title Kismet is derived from the Persian word “Quesmat” meaning divide but also Fate.

PLOT: 

Vincente Minnelli directed this adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical inspired by the One Thousand and One Nights tales. Persian poet Hadji (Howard Keel) becomes a rich man nearly overnight, bringing love in the form of Lalume (Dolores Gray) and romance for his daughter (Ann Blyth). But Hadji’s fortunate circumstances also kindle the evil schemes of the shifty Wazir (Sebastian Cabot). Songs include the popular “Stranger in Paradise.”
