One of the major news stories of the day was about a sexually frustrated 48-year old man in Pennsylvania who went to a local LA Fitness aerobics class and opened fire on the women there. According to his blogs and the letters that were left behind, the guy’s excuse was that women have been rejecting him for many years. He wrote that he had his last girlfriend back in 1984 and his last sexual encounter was 18 years ago when he was 29. He has been rejected by women ever since.
The story brought back memories of the “Saga of Amaleh va Mini Joopi” which is probably the closest case of a violent reaction to a sexual frustration case that happened in Iran. Here is how the story went.
Back in the pre-revolutionary Iran, the construction workers in Tehran, Amaleh, were generally illiterate and came from far away villages to Tehran to get jobs. Around lunch time, these workers would go to a bakery (Noonvaie) and a produce market (Baghaali) to get their lunch. The lunch generally comprised of bread (Barbari), cheese (Bolghaar), grapes (Angoor e Asgari) and a soda (Canada Dry). So on a very hot summer day, this Amaleh ate his lunch in the shades in front of a Baghaali and put his head down on the sidewalk for a short nap before going back to work. A few minutes later a young woman in a very tight mini skirt walks by and decides to buy some fruits. As she was checking the summer fruits, the Amaleh who was sleeping on the ground looks up and sees a pair of nice chubby thighs barely covered in a mini skirt. For a few seconds the dude is totally disoriented and not quite sure what he is seeing. Then, he loses control, gets up and grabs the lady very tightly and would not let go of her! The shopkeepers, pedestrians and the cab drivers see the commotion and everyone jumps in to separate the Amaleh from Mini Joopi, but he would not let go of her. The struggle goes on for a while. Finally, the Amaleh lets go of the lady and peace is re-stored. He gets kicked in the butt a few times and then let go.
The story made it to the papers the next day and was a joke for the longest time in Iran.
