My Special Valentine!

Yes, Valentine’s Day is fast approaching again. For many with a special someone it is not that exciting anymore. After all, what do you get or do for him or her? You go to the stores and there is so many things on sale to prove that you still care about them. I was driving by a store the other day and they actually had a sign “Emergency sale for those that wait until the last minute”. LOL Who knew Valentine’s Day would be an emergency.

Now don’t get me wrong there are many that really do love Valentine’s Day. Many couples do value each other but know that it is more than just on Valentine’s Day. They simply do things for each other through out the year. They make time for each other by having a date night once a week. It is not easy to be in a good relationship these days without actually making it a priority.

I am amazed and very impressed as some of my colleagues make the time to be with their husbands. It is not easy for them to balance their lives but they know how important it is to make time for each other. The last thing one wants is to wake up one day and find out you are in a relationship with a stranger. I do realize that it is easier said then done to make time for each other.

Let’s face it people change. Whether it  is by their own choice or due to life. People do change in many areas.  I certainly need to have space to grow as an individual within the relationship. Doesn’t mean that one would want to get out of the relationship. Of course, it is also good to develop some mutual interests. It allows the person that we fell in love with to continue to be the amazing person that we fell in love with.

Now for those of us without a special someone the day may not be as thrilling. You see your co-workers getting all those beautiful flowers, chocolates, cards and so forth. You hear everyone talking about those special plans. You may feel a bit depressed. However, there are other alternatives. One must not despair.

One year, I actually had one of my sons be my sister’s Valentine. She was getting over a heartbreak and it was very nice for her to know that my son truly cared about her. Just to know that she was special to him. I made sure that he took her some flowers, and chocolates. He dressed nicely and I gave him some money for him to buy her dinner. I am sure that both of them will cherish such a precious memory forever.

For the last ten years I have had a very special Valentine or two. My sons have been my Valentine. We pretty much do the same thing. They get me a card, we either go to the movies or rent some movies. We decide what restaurant to go to. I would even get a little gift from them. :o)

This year Arman is away but Julio is with me. So, I still have a special Valentine. We have not decided yet if we will go to the Texas Roadhouse (his favorite) or Red Lobster (my favorite). We will do our best to compromise on the movie selection. A blend of comedy, action  and romance will have to be in the movie or movies we get. Actually, we have gotten very good at compromising.

He even got me two cute little bears for Valentine’s Day already. I just totally love them. They are my sleeping buddies. Go ahead and make fun of me. However, my son truly knows how special his gifts were to me. He does not have much money but he bought me what he could. He gave them truly out of love for me. No gift could be more valuable to me.  I will cherish them always………
