A truly compelling photo of women shouting in protest from a rooftop in Tehran has won the World Press Photo of the Year award for 2009.
Italian photographer Pietro Masturzo took this shot while covering the turmoil in Iran following its disputed June presidential election:
The chair of the jury that determined the winners, Ayperi Karabuda Ecer, says in a statement posted here that: “The photo shows the beginning of something, the beginning of a huge story. It adds perspectives to news. It touches you both visually and emotionally, and my heart went out to it immediately.”
“I cannot believe it,” Masturzo said when told of the award. He said the photo was taken one week after the June 12 election.
World Press Photo professes to be “known for organizing the world’s largest and most prestigious annual press photography contest.” The contest is open to professional photojournalists from around the world.
