Iran says sanctions to strengthen IRGC: MP

TEHRAN, July 13 (Xinhua) — An Iranian lawmaker said Tuesday that sanctions will further enhance capabilities and potential of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), the local satellite Press TV reported.

“The enemies of the Islamic Republic seek to weaken the powerful arms of the revolution, namely the IRGC,” Hossein Sobhani- Nia, member of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission was quoted as saying.

Dismissing the sanctions as a nonstarter, Sobhani-Nia said IRGC has played a “positive” and “constructive” role in the nation’s development and progress.

Also on Tuesday, the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad praised IRGC as a strong force that guarantees the security of the Iranian nation, according to Press TV.

“The defensive power of the IRGC and the army will cut off the hands of the arrogant and bullying powers,” Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying in a gathering attended by top IRGC commanders.
