On Friday Iranian ambassador Kazem Gharib Abadi was summoned by the Dutch foreign minister. He assured him that the case against Zahra Bahrami was still ongoing. She was to get a ‘fair trial’ and would be represented by two lawyers.
Not 24 hours after the ambassador’s visit, the state media in Tehran reported Bahrami’s hanging. That was on the morning of last Saturday. In the early afternoon of the same day, Gharib-Abadi was summoned again. He confirmed the execution. Bahrami had had no access to her lawyers and was denied the opportunity to say goodbye to her family.
Dutch Foreign minister Uri Rosenthal said: ‘It is deplorable that the Iranian authorities did not keep their word and that the first we knew about this was through the media.’ The minister announced on Saturday, 30 January 2011, that all diplomatic ties with Iran have been severed.
