Well I finally did it! Many will recall a blog I had so long ago. In which I discussed having a tattoo done. It took me a long time to do it because of various reasons.
First of all, it had to be because I wanted it and not because the majority did not want me to do it. Sort of a rebel without a cause decision. After all this is a very permanent decision and I did not take it lightly.
The other reason is that I could not decide on the design and the size of the tattoo. I wanted some thing that I would love having on me forever. The last reason, was that I needed to make sure where I wanted it placed. Decisions, decisions, decisions.
My eldest son wanted several roses. My youngest son did not believe I would do it. My mother did not understand me. The rest of the family thought it was a midlife crisis. Some of my friends thought it was out of character for me. If you meet me, you would never imagine that I would have a tattoo. I am just so prim and proper.
In the end, I did go through with it. In the infamous words of Sinatra, “I did it my way.” I decided to do it in the summer to allow me time to heal away from work. I went to a professional tattoo artist. I went over the designs with him and ended up combining two designs to make my unique butterfly. I selected varying hues of purple to represent my birthstone.
Why a butterfly design? I love the transformation from a caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly. As humans we evolve in our journey into something so beautiful. At least the majority of people do. I am aware there are exceptions but I hope the majority of people do evolve to something so amazing: self-actualization.
I can tell you that it was very painful at the time the tattoo was being created on my upper back. Thank goodness, it was not a huge tattoo. It took half an hour to do but it seemed like forever. My eldest son was hoping I would add cherry blossoms one day but I don’t think that is going to happen. The butterfly will be flying solo. LOL
