Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Sixty six years ago these days, in the period between 6th and 9th August 1945, the greatest democracy in the world, the United States of America, dropped two atomic bombs, nick-named Little Boy and Fat Man on two Japanese civilain targets in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively.  The Little Boy annhilated an estimated number 118,661 (later increased to 140,000) of 350,000 population of Hiroshima and the Fat Man wiped off 74,000 humans in Nagasaki. Countless number of civilians died in later months and years due to sever burns due to exposure to radiation and cancer in both cities.

America’s rationale for dropping these bombs was to shorten the war and save lives on both sides of the conflict. In other words, let us kill hundreds of thousands (of enemy civilians, instantly instead killing the same number or more over a long period of time!!

The questions that need to be asked are these:

  • Would the same rationale been accepted if Hitler or Hirohito had shortened the war by dropping similar bombs on London and New York?
  • Does it feel better if you are bombed to oblivion by a democracy rather than by a dictatorship?
  • Is there a different name than genocide for what happened in Hiroshima, Nagasaki and earlier in Dresden, Germany?
  • If dictatorships are not chosen by the people they rule over, then how can the mass killings of the same people who had no say in their rulers decision to go to war be justified?
  •  How can a Christian nation that believes in “Peace on Earth” justify the mass killing of men, women and children in the name peace?
