Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s home in Virginia, was my last stop before reaching Washington, DC, my final destination, finally! It was a reminder of what a great man he was: unquestionably flawed in his ownership of slaves until the very end, until his death, and yet so influential in the spread of the idea that all are created equal, that liberty and the pursuit of happiness are everyone’s inalienable rights.
