Iranian Communist groups go on trial in Tehran

Twenty five members of the Iranian Communist groups go on trial in Tehran. The defendants are alleged to have taken part in a raid on the northern city of Amol and killed members of its Muslim population. The public trial, held in Tehran’s Evin prison, is being conducted by Ayatollah Guillani. Ayatollah Khomeini, has recently launched a campaign of liberalisation which has led to a purge of radicals and pro-Soviet Communists, notably in the pro-Moscow Tudeh Party. 150 officials including judges, mayors and prayer-leaders, have lost their posts or have been forced to resign.
