Haji Firooz

Down in the courtyard, Haji Firooz is playing–

singing, wailing
beating his tambourine.

But the children are all gone.
Lined up like tea spoons in a drawer,

they sleep away this golden afternoon.

Still he calls out,

I’m Haji Firooz-eh!

It’s finally Noo Ruz-eh!
Across the courtyard a window is open.
A woman in her shirt sleeves hangs from the 7th floor window

lazily clapping her hands.

Winter is leaving us!

Why don’t you smile?

Tonight, in one of these apartments,
there might be a wedding.
Music and lights might fill this courtyard.

The revelry could last until dawn.

Everyone knows!

Now I know, too!

But now, only Haji Firooz is playing

and only the woman in short sleeves claps her hands.

It is, as if, they alone could usher in a new year.

Winter is leaving us!

Everyone knows! Now you know too.

Go on, throw him some coins.
