As one of the most progressive members of Congress, especially on issues of foreign policy, freshman Representative Omar more than raised a few eyebrows yesterday when she Tweeted the following:
The people of Syria revolted against Assad's repressive dictatorship 8 years ago today, demanding a more just and free government. Peace loving people around the world stand in solidarity with them in this struggle!

Why it matters: As one of the first two Muslim-American women ever elected to Congress, Omar earned widespread praise among progressives for her willingness to take on the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), and more broadly the influence of money on congressional support for the Israeli government. So it came as a major disappointment and surprise to many who viewed Omar’s Tweet as nothing more than pandering to the mainstream media narrative of Syrian President Assad and Syrian war which the US has fueled for years.
