In an exciting match, the 26-year old Asgari defeated Italian Luigi Busà in the Kumite −75 kg in Saturday’s final to win the gold medal at the 2018 Karate World Championships hosted in Madrid, Spain.
Bronze medals went to Japanese Ken Nishimura and Rafael Aghayev from the Azerbaijan Republic.
Iran’s Sajad Ganjzadeh from Iran also medalled, earning a Silver in the Kumite +84 kg match.
Another Iranian to medal on Saturday was Zabihollah Pourshab. Pourshab defeated Kazakhstan’s Daniel Yuldashev to earn a bronze medal in Kumite −84 kg . The gold medal went to Croatian Ivan Kvesić who defeated Chobotar in the final.
The 24th Karate World Championships are Karate’s biggest event. The tournament is regarded as the highest level of competition for karate organized by the World Karate Federation. Held every two years, the Karate Senior World Championships gather athletes from over a hundred countries and is the last major tournament before the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
