Iran has discovered a new oilfield near the southwestern city of Abadan, Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said to the Mehr news agency on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a cabinet session in Tehran, Zanganeh said workers drilling a well at ‘Minoo’ region near Abadan discovered crude oil on Tuesday morning.
“It is the first time we discover oil in Abadan,” the minister added.
He noted that the oil well is 3,770 meters deep and is “very light and sweet”. Zanganeh gave no estimate of how much oil the well might contain.
Zanganeh went on to say that efforts are underway to assess the quantity of oil available in the newly-discovered oilfield.
