Khan Neydavud’s father. According to Musa Khan’s own
inscription on the back of the photograph, this portrait was taken
at the Royal Photoshop ('akaskhaneh-ye saltaniti) on the
first of Elul, the year 5667 of the Hebrew calendar, some time
after Musa Khan received an official invitation from the court
to come to Tehran and perform for Naser al-Din Shah. Two copies
of the photograph were produced. One belongs to Musa Khan’s
grandson. The other is on display at Shah-Cheragh in Shiraz. At
the time of the photograph, Bala Khan was the zarbgir (zarb player)
