Mammad Aidani's life journey has been distinguished
by a struggle to come to terms with a profound sense of alienation,
resultant
of the torment
of war (Mammad's birth place was invaded by Saddam Hussein's army in
the early 1980s), and displacement from his beloved Persian culture and
language. After 25 years of searching he found in Melbourne and La
Mama, a creative home where he has come to feel both accepted and
appreciated.
Features three lectures: Lecture One: "Reflection on marginality,
displacement, language and writing" (Chaired by Liz Jones) contains
two lectures and a reading of his new play, followed by Supper and
informal discussion; Lecture Two "Poetic space, generosity and acts of
friendship" (Chaired by Kevin Pearson) is with Afternoon Tea / Coffee;
Lecture Three (Chaired by Ian De Lacy) contains a reading of a new play,
and a discussion with the playwright, and followed by informal drinks.
A Celebration also features excerpts from five of Mammad's La Mama
plays: An Idiot Amongst Us, Two Steps Not Here... Not There, She, In
The Mirror and Waiting For Sunset, with performers including Adam
Cass, Liz Jones, Andrew Gilbert, Peter Finlay, Raymond Triggs and
