The Shrine of the Bab is lit behind the Israeli flag during ceremonies
marking the inauguration of 18 terraces of gardens, waterfalls, and marble
staircases leading to the Bahai shrine in the northern coastal Israeli town
of Haifa, late Tuesday May 22, 2001. The completion of the gardens took
10 years and cost $250 million. About 3,000 believers from around the world
attended the inauguration. Bahai, is a split from Islam and was founded
in the mid-1800s by Baha'ullah in Iran. Bahai teach the importance of abandoning
all prejudice and recognize the essential unity and common themes of all
religions. The Bahai community numbers some 5 million worldwide.
