Iranian schoolgirls wearing headscarves, background, gather in a courtyard at a female
school as schoolboys play soccer in their school in this file photo taken on Feb.
2002 in Tehran. For the first time since the 1979 revolution, the Education Ministry
is allowing girls to attend all-female schools in Tehran without headscarves a move
religious hard-liners criticized as "encouraging nudity." The Education
Ministry said in a directive published Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002 that schoolgirls aged7
to 18 will be allowed to appear in class without the mandatory headscarves and robes.
