On December 23rd the United Nations Security Council imposed sanctions calling for a full and sustained suspension of the Iran's uranium enrichment activities. Since the latter is a perfectly legal act being carried out by several other Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) signatory nations, one may wonder whether this latest nonsensical decision via resolution 1737 represents the world view on Iran or just that of the United States and the other four permanent members  Britain, France, China, and Russia.

Since the end of the Cold War, US has been seeking to establish a permanent global dominance and what some in the Project for a New American Century (PNAC) call a stable and enduring unipolar world centered on the best interests of the United States. To achieve this, it has strived to attain dominance over the strategically vital region of West Asia despite the greatest political-strategic defeat it suffered in the overthrow of the former Shah of Iran and the establishment of a clerical regime which for all its tangible and moral support to the American invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, remains fundamentally independent and can strongly oppose certain US imperial ambitions in the region.

The aims of the US government since the fall of the Shah in 1979 has been constant -- undermine the Iranian regime and make it subordinate through regime change if necessary. Under the present administration in Washington packed with members of PNAC and authors of the report entitled "Rebuilding America's Defenses: Strategies, Forces, and Resources for a New Century" which among other things calls for unprecedented increases in military spending, establishment of military bases in Central and West Asia, toppling of non-complying regimes, abrogation of international treaties, control of the world's energy sources, militarization of outer space, total control of cyberspace, and the willingness to use nuclear weapons to achieve "American" goals, those aims took on a new urgency.

What is or should be frightening to every world citizen, is the sheer disregard by this cabal of neo-conservatives for the catastrophic consequences of implementing such dangerous policies. Oblivious to the mess created in Iraq and Afghanistan, they continue to use the very same tactics pushing for a far more serious confrontation with Iran. This latest bogus resolution pushed and coerced by the United States and passed by the UNSC is eerily reminiscent of what got us into the Iraq fiasco.

Unfortunately the time is not on our side and the world can not afford to idly stand by and allow this to happen. Those outraged by the Iraqi deception must now stand up and repeatedly make it known, over the deafening megaphones of the war-mongers, that:

1) Iran is not in breach of any international conventions or agreements. Processing of uranium is entirely within the guidelines of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and according to the IAEA, all fissile material have been accounted for and confirmed as not diverted to prohibited activities.

2) The UN Security Council is not the world and hence does not reflect the will of the 'international community' – it represents the views and positions of 15 nations five of which are undemocratically assigned as permanent members including the United States, Britain, China, France and Russia.

3) Any military action against Iran regardless of the Security Council approval would be ethically and morally void of any legitimacy. Comment
