* How can I not?

When I saw Saman's latest cartoon in my email box, my first reaction was, there's no way I'm going to publish this. But as I write to you, I'm thinking, how can I not?

The fact is that I think the National Iranian American Council (NIAC) does good work. And I think its president, Trita Parsi, cares about the community. He has built an organization that is working hard to raise awareness about the issues facing Iranian-Americans. It has also done a great job to encourage people to donate money for earthquake victims in Bam.

So, it came as a shock that Saman sees it quite differently.

I have refused to publish articles, letters, photos, cartoons, art... but never because I disagreed with the writer or artist. (Actually, I did refuse to publish something my morther wrote about my father. But I won't get into to that now.)

Am I making a big deal out of a simple cartoon? Probably. But in my professional world, it's really important to be fair and encourage free speech. It's the kind of stuff I deal with on a regular basis. Publish or not to publish? The answer is publish, almost always.

So as to make your "eydeh norooz" and "saal tahvel" planning easier, here is the schedule of all "saal tahveels" until the year 2020 - look for the Vernal (Spring) Equinox schedule.

For example, this upcoming Eyd, March 2004: VERNAL EQUINOX (SPRING) MAR 20 2004  149 AM EST - 0649 UTC. Which means "saal tahveel" will be on SAT March 20th, 2004 at

-- 06:49 AM Universal Time (formerly known as Greenwich Mean Time)
-- 10:19 AM Iran TIME (Tehran, Esfehan, Shiraz, Ghoochaan, Boraazjaan)
-- 12:49 AM Cental Time (Chicago, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston)

equivalent to FRI March 19th, 2004:

In case you wonder why "saaaal tahveel" is on a Saturday on the East Coast (and Iran)  and on a Friday on the West Coast, please bang your head several times against the wall and you will then know (sorry bad memories from prior emails :-)
