* Backgammon: Grandpa

My grandfather, who by all accounts was a kind and decent man, loved to play backgammon.  He would play the game for hours often becoming irritated if he was interrupted.

One day, while he was playing an important match against a strong opponent, he was interrupted by a mullah who was invited to the house to wed one of the servants.  This woman had been in the family for years and now had decided to get married.

Before performing the ceremony however, the mullah wanted to make sure that the bride was a virgin.  So he sent someone to get my grandfather to come and testify to that effect.  My grandfather, who was upset to have left his game, did not know why he had been bothered and wanted to get back to play as fast as possible.

Upon entering the room, the mullah asked my grandfather: "Sir, could you please testify that the bride is a virgin so that we can proceed with the ceremony?"

To this my grandfather immediately responded:

"I very much wanted to find out sir, but my wife never gave me permission!" and he rushed back to his game.

* East in West

Zahra telling a story among a group of friends at a pub:

There's a large room in our office in San Francisco where I work. The room is used for storage and there's a lot of unused chairs and desks and boxes.

One of my Iranian co-worker has made a makeshift bed under one of the desks for occasional afternoon naps. Later I started taking naps there too. Only a few of us know about the secret location.

One day during one of my naps I heard some noise. At first, it sounded like some cardboard was being moving around behind me. I didn't want to look; the wrong person could catch me napping.

Then I heard some faint sounds: "pech pech pech pech...." I couldn't wait anymore. I turned around and saw our Turkish worker performing namaz, Muslim prayer.

* Jomhourikhahan

I went to a meeting of Jomhourikhahan -- Iranians in favor of a secular republic -- several months ago. I was impressed by their civility, open-minded and democratic approach as well as their understanding of the modern political process. This group can become a formidable force in Iranian politics -- even though it may takes years.

The local branch is having a meeting in San Jose next week. Here's their annoucement:
