I ran from Eye-ran

By Pejman Mosleh
April 20, 1999
The Iranian

The Lester B. Pearson International Airport immigration officer looked deeply into my eyes. His lips did not move but his eyes were telling. "I've seen your type." He picked up the phone and rang out a request. The word "translator" echoed in his pronouncement. A minute or so later, a slouching man with a lifeless expression appeared. He cast a dead glance at me and waited.

"Country of origin?" This time, I understood the foreign tongue and did not wait for the defunct newcomer.

"E-run." I said gingerly.

"Where did he say?" I felt slighted ... GO TO FEATURE

Iran And Future Developments In The Oil Market

By Seyyed Mehdi Hosseini
Middle East Economic Survey (MEES)
19 April 1999

There follows the text of a presentation given by Mr. Seyyed Mehdi Hosseini, Iran's Deputy Minister of Petroleum for International Affairs, at the Seventh Middle East Petroleum and Gas Conference in Bahrain on 12 April.

Events in the international oil market and the deterioration of the oil prices exhibited the vulnerabilities of all those investors which embarked upon huge investments of hundreds of billions of dollars developing high cost reserves ... In response to the letter "Won't marry down"

Dear Sara,

Thanks for your response. It is very informative but misguided. Regardless to what you consider yourself to be the truth is, you're not white. I don't say this as a put down just merely stating a fact. Be it White, Black, brown, yellow, or red we are all from God and no one is superior.

Before I met my girlfriend I knew racism existed everywhere but was under the impression that it was more toxic here in America. I have received e-mail from all over the world most from Iranian women but some from Iranian men. Every e-mail that I received was of support and empathy. My girlfriend was the first Iranian women I had ever really spent time with. The fact that she is Iranian had nothing to do with the way I feel about her. The reason I love her is because she is a very good person whom I admire and respect. Thanks to the Internet, I know have a lot of new Iranian friends write me since I submitted my letter... * Noble... but not good

Noghrey@aol.com writes: Please do not promote the ideas of the woman who chooses Blacks as boyfriends ["Siaah Sookhteh"]. Although tolerance of other races and cultures is a noble idea, it is best not to try to ask the public to accept these ideas based on such isolated cases.

From Palace to Prison
An autobiography by Azar Aryanpour

Not long after Azar Aryanpour returned home to Iran in September of 1978, following a visit with two of her children in Washington, DC, a state of martial law was declared. Her husband-the former Minister of Health and Welfare under the Shah and an American-trained orthopaedic surgeon who played a role in the real-life events chronicled in Ken Follett's best-selling book On Wings of Eagles-was subsequently and wrongfully imprisoned. Now, nearly two decades later, Azar Aryanpour speaks for the first time in Behind the Tall Walls, an autobiographical retrospective of the tumultuous events that resulted in the overthrow of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi ...
