The Iranian

Just today I was accused of having a personal agenda in the way I run The Iranian. Well, it's not an accusation at all. I admit it. Here's further proof.

Yasmine Rafii advertises her greeting cards here in iranian.com. But they are so gorgeous that I'm featuring them as works of art. Any complaints? ... GO TO FEATURE

Outlook

Persian exports in a nutshell
Iran's prized, and political, nuts --It's harvesttime, and farmers hope to export more pistachios as they compete against the US.

By Scott Peterson
Christian Science Monitor
December 2, 1999

On a visit to the United States in the early 1980s, Iranian farmer Falli Karbassian remembers seeing a billboard on Santa Monica Boulevard in California. It read: " 'Would you rather buy pistachios from this?' and there was a picture of a little man leading a camel through the desert." she says. " 'Or from this?' and there was a picture of a California beauty."

There are only two places in the world where large commercial orchards of pistachio nuts are grown: Iran's humidity-free southeast and in the US, primarily in California. This fact has added another ingredient to troubled relations between the two countries, as farmers battle to capture the growing market for the green nuts ... FULL IMAGE

* Iranians in the U.S.: political power

Ben Bagheri writes: As Iranian-Americans - according to US government there are more than a million of us - we have to begin concentrating on our identity and status here, in our new home! On the eve of the 2000 US presidential elections and the upcoming Census 2000, we have to make a concerted and aggressive effort to declare our significant existence to the political establishment.

We must begin developing our political power base in whatever party we happen to lean towards. We should also prepare for Census 2000 and plan to provide the type of racial information that will put Iranians on the map as a legitimate and significant minority. This census will be our best chance for being counted (for more information search for Census 2000 on the Web) ... FULL TEXT

* Personal agenda

Sina Dadfarmay writes: You know, Jahanshah, if you weren't such a fucking asshole who puts his own personal agenda and views ahead of journalistic integrity and impartiality, I (and I'm sure others as well) would actually feel comfortable writing a letter or two to your magazine in response to something, knowing that you'd post it. But NO, instead we must resort to writing individual letters to people, which is fine. But I (as an ex-journalist myself) just wanted to tell you what I think of you.

Jahanshah Javid replies: I can and will have a personal agenda. I think my track record proves I'm fair towards everybody. I LIKE being fair. You don't think I'm fair enough, don't read it.

Inhuman

In an act in conflict with public opinion, the Special Court for Clergy has imprisoned a figure-head of the revolution based on a politically motivated and non-legal indictment ... How long will the judicial authorities want to remain witness to...such inhuman behaviour?
