Or 13 Bedar in Washington DC

We all know how difficult it is to be an Iranian out of Iran. Take yesterday's
"13 Bedar" in Washington DC, for example. It was celebrated not
on the 13th day of the New Year but on the first convenient weekend. Was
this acceptable to Ahura Mazda. Hope so. It's the thought that counts,

Iranians Bring Park Alive on Special Day
By SEEMA MEHTA

Thursday, April 5, 1999
Spring has finally arrived in Irvine.
True, the first day of the season was March 21. But around William R.
Mason Regional Park, spring doesn't really begin until the air is thick
with the smoky smells of exotic foods and the sounds of traditional music
that accompany the celebration of an Iranian holiday. Sunday, more than
10,000 people came to the park to observe Sizdeh-Beder.
Although the holiday is rooted in an ancient Persian religion, Sizdeh-Beder
is a cultural celebration for Iranians of all faiths. Families and friends
gather at parks, beaches and other outdoor spots to renew relationships,
sing, dance and feast ... FULL
Iranian ingenuity: Vending machines to serve Pizzas
MADRID, March 25 (AFP) - TelePizza, Spain's biggest pizza franchise
operation, announced Thursday it was about to bring out the world's first
vending machine for pizzas.
Slap in 275 pesetas (1.60 euros, 1.80 dollars) and out comes a hot pizza.
TelePizza president Leopoldo Fernandez Pujals said his company was investing
10.8 million euros (11.8 million dollars) to bring the machine to markets
in Europe, the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia and Latin America.
TelePizza, which will distribute the machines through a joint venture
with their inventor, an Iranian named Massoud Zandi, plans on selling 9,000
over the next three years -- which means a total of around 96.9 million

* A wonderful luxury
Minou writes: I enjoyed your rather
tasteless April Fool's joke - it did make me smile but it was rather too
close to the knuckle ["Iran

read the letter by Ali Hashemi-Nejad. To claim cultural and class superiority
and yet to not be able to spell invites hilarity - not sympathy.
Humor is a wonderful teaching tool - and the responses to your prank
have made me think about the incredible luxury of free speech. It is not
purely an American luxury - it is a luxury that people try and uphold everywhere

Katayoun Hashemi writes: What
an awful joke ["Iran

subscriber [to The Iranian Times]. You are running a media and these
kinds of jokes are not acceptable at all. Can we trust you anymore? Have
you ever heard the TV or radio stations in this country [U.S.] giving the
wrong information ... or just joking about it?

By Josef Wiesehofer
Josef Wiesehofer, one of the most respected scholars of the ancient
world, provides here a comprehensive survey of the Persian Empire under
the Achaemenids, the Parthians and the Sasanians. By focusing on the indigenous
sources - written, archaeological and numismatic evidence from Persia -
he avoids the traditional Western approach which has tended to rely so
heavily on foreign and sometimes prejudiced Greek or Roman sources. Part
of the freshness of this book comes from its presentation of a historical
discussion of pre-Islamic Persia from a Near Eastern perspective.
