The Iranian
In this feature there are several photos of Iranian air force planes
from before the revolution (Imperial Iranian Air Force, IIAF). But in truth,
there's only one really interesting photo on this page.
It shows the late Mohammad Reza Shah with a group of air force families.
It's from 1955. The Shah looks confident and in control. Why shouldn't
he be? Mossadegh has been sent into exile; the opposition has been silenced;
the Americans are providing loans and military hardware; the Russians are
cooperative... everything seems to be going smoothly. And it shows: ...

Former Iranian envoy in air mishap
Phoenix, Arizona wire services, April 1, 1999 - The little Cessna plane
with a lion emblem saw an opportunity where others didn't. Ignoring air-traffic
controllers' orders to circle, the plane daringly squeezed between two
Boeing 737s on their approach to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

But when the Cessna piloted by a former Iranian diplomat touched down,
it proceeded down the wrong taxiway. Bring out the nytroglycerine pills.
Maybe the aging pilot thought he was landing at Tehran's airport during

seat of its pants ... FULL

* Peacekeeping?
Aref Erfani writes:
How exactly would a "peacekeeping" force ["Why
Kosovo?"]gain access into a sovereign country (i.e. Yugoslavia)
without either the cooperation/permission of that government or by force
(outright ground war)? The former was an option but did not work (Yugoslav
government did not agree) and the latter is still an option - albeit an
expensive one in terms of human lives on both sides. In addition, while
the cause of defending the Kosovars is novel and humanitarian, it may not
be strong enough to get the public (read votes and money) to support it.
Then again, it is too early to tell. It is only day 15 of the bombin ...
