The Iranian

Because of the psycho-chemistry of transplantation, no immigrant ever melts in the pot. Many take the dive and try, for whatever reason, but only manage to dissolve partially before they become unconsciously defensive just like that nasty stubborn lump which refuses to become a part of the gravy for fear of losing it all. Even if one wished and willed to lose one's earlier identity, there may not be acceptance by the pot itself ... GO TO FEATURE

Iran declares war on "man's best friend"

TEHRAN, April 20 (AFP) -Iran's highest judicial official, Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi, called for the police to keep dogs and other pets off the streets, Kayhan paper reported Tuesday.

"This is an Islamic city, and keeping domestic animals in the house is no problem, but their being walked on the streets is an insult to others, and the police can intervene," said Yazdi, one of the Islamic republic's leading conservatives.

The authorities have been calling for years for dog owners to refrain from walking the animals in parks and streets.

In 1994, Tehran's mayor prohibited dogs from appearing in public places for religious and hygienic reasons.

His ability to meticulously manuever around the facts about the horrendous atrocities being carried out against Muslim women and children is a disgusting, yet masterful, example of obfuscation. Esphandyar Rohrabi writes: In different stages of my life I had three black girlfriends and even to this date my Iranian friends talk about them with envy, so lets not over-dramatize & confuse the issues ["Siaah Sookhteh"]. As with any other race, it's hard & in some cases futile to change the elders' conservative views. But it's always good to know that your granddad wasn't the Grand Wizard in the local KKK ... Five Mystic Poets of Persia : Translations from the Poems of Sanai, Attar, Rumi, Saadi and Hafiz

Our children

The assimilation process which begins with the first arrival ends eventually with the arrival of the first, an offspring born in the new environment. Despite all parental efforts and directions to the contrary, the environment claims the child as its own. That child is born not on the cultural island which the parents have carved out, but rather he is born in the melting pot. Mom and dad remain forever pieces of cucumber, tomato, or a lump, providing the child's first brush with an incomprehensible nostalgia.
