On the ball
Comparing the Iranian and U.S. soccer teams
By Amir Aras
June 30, 1999
The Iranian
Will the U.S., currently ranked 24th, continue its path to success and
become one of the top 10 teams in the world? After completing three successful
professional soccer seasons and attracting foreign players and, more importantly,
sponsors, the U.S. is making all the right moves to get to the top. Soccer
is now the most popular sport among American kids. It's only a matter of
time...
Now my question is, will MY team, the Iranian national team, find a
steady path to success even in Asia? Like most of you, I love our team.
But watching a few players who want to save their legs for foreign clubs
does not give much pleasure anymore. And what about the team's managers?
Do they know what they are doing? ... GO TO FEATURE
Outlook
Prayers for Jewish Iranians
Chicago Tribune
June 26, 1999
Just when Iran seemed to be building new bridges to the West and slowly
emerging from behind its radical Islamic veil, the country's conservative
clerics have shown their intolerant, unforgiving faces again.
This time Iran has arrested at least 13 Iranian Jews--Hebrew teachers,
religious activists, a rabbi, a kosher butcher, a shoe store owner--and
accused them of spying for Israel and the United States. They face trial
soon; the penalty could be death. ... FULL

We must take a stand and voice our opinion as loudly as we can, chanting
for a free society. Only then, the Good shall triumph over Evil and the

The Legend of the Persian Carpet
By Tomie De Paola
Children who've been told of the diamond's legendary hardness may question
the ease with which this one is shattered. A king, accustomed to dwelling
in a light-filled room where a large diamond creates a million rainbows,
is bereft when it's stolen and smashed, and thereafter takes his only pleasure
in staring at the fragments, away from the subjects who need him. An apprentice
weaver comes up with the idea of making a magnificent carpet that will
lure the king back to his duties. It works. But, unfortunately, neither
the words nor the art here convincingly suggests the lure of the diamond's
prismatic play or the carpet's intricate patterns. Readers will have to
take these on faith. Still, Ewart's illustrations are prettily evocative
of old Persia, and perhaps the tale will pique interest in this ancient
art form ... GO TO BOOK
