Politics
Cyrus meets Lincoln
Iranian-American runs for U.S. Senate
By S. Rob Sobhani
November 5, 1999
The Iranian
Twelve years ago on a crisp fall morning I entered the campaign offices
of Connie Morella to volunteer my services. Connie, as she was called by
everyone, was a Republican running for the U.S. Congress from heavily Democratic
Montgomery County, Maryland ... Here I was, a descendant of Cyrus the Great
in the land of Washington and Lincoln, making a difference. This experience
got me interested in politics and the rest, as they say, is history.
Today I am campaigning to become the first U.S. Senator of Iranian descent
(I was born in Kansas) because I truly believe that we, the descendants
of Cyrus the Great, must join the children of Washington, Jefferson and
Lincoln, to make a more perfect union. A union in which we care of those
left behind, educate the uneducated, end prejudice and racism and protect
our natural beauties ... GO

Iranian teens just wanna have their fun
By JOYCE M. DAVIS
Miamai Herald
TEHRAN, Iran -- Increasingly, even young
Iranians who care little about politics are rebelling against a society
whose architect, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, once proclaimed, ``There
is no fun in Islam.''
Instead, many Iranian youth are intent these days on having fun, and
their increasing defiance may represent the most potent challenge to one
of the world's strictest Islamic societies ... FULL

Moftaki Majjani writes:
This is in response to Isa Tanha. I am
wondering where and in which era does Mr. Tanha thinks he is living. Young
people in America have traditionally used Halloween ["Halloween
1999"] to make fun of older generations. Most masks and costumes
depict politicians and figures who have gained prominance in the preceding
year ...
Look my dear friend, I really do share your frustration with the speed
our cultural values are being diluted in this day and age. But you can
not blame Iranian youth. I would rather criticize The Iranian for
glorifying it by posting the pictures in its site ... FULL

In Iran, "Great Satan" means
great pizza
TEHRAN, Nov 3 (AFP) - The United States may officially remain the

a kind of "cultural invasion" from the United States despite a
20-year freeze in diplomatic relations ... FULL TEXT

NYMEX crude up on Norway, eases on OPEC
compliance
NEW YORK,
Nov 5 (Reuters) - Crude oil futures and products moved sharply up early
Friday, helped by news that Norway may consider extending supply cuts beyond
March next year but then moved lower mid-morning as profit-takers took down
the front month from its high perch, traders said. Traders said the trek
downwards followed news of a Reuters survey showing that compliance to output
cuts by 10 OPEC members slipped to 80 percent in October from 86 percent
